Hello and welcome! This silly blog is an experiment in my own vanity in terms of my opinions on craft beer and music and various pairings (much like you would do with food). I definitely want to express that I am no expert in terms of brewing or in musical composition. This is merely opinion, my opinion (sometimes clouded by consumption) with regards to enjoyable beers and music. Cheers! January 29th, 2012 - In League With IPA
A horned and devilishly good pairing for you today (actually had this last night, but didn't have time to write a review)... Big Sky IPA from Big Sky Brewing Company (Missoula, MT) and Venom's classic "Welcome To Hell"... they both bite, kick, and headbutt, but are great fun for a Saturday night or Sunday afternoon.
Big Sky IPA is a crisp and aromatic India Pale with citrus and pine notes coupled with a sweet finish. Light amber in color, Big Sky pours cloudy with a healthy 1-2 finger head. Although not as hoppy in fragrance as some of the other northwestern IPAs, Big Sky has a very floral nose with underlying sweetness. It has a very strong malty flavor coupled with the bittersweet hop and again, a sweet finish. A very good, solid IPA.
With obvious influence from Motorhead in song structure, style, and delivery (although definitely not as talented), Venom is credited with being the first black metal band, though they sound nothing like what would be considered black metal today. With tongue-in-cheek lyrics exploring Satanic and sexual themes (fully intent on scaring the crap out of clergy and parents alike) along with grinding rhythms and chainsaw guitar solos, "Welcome To Hell" is a great album for throwing back a stronger flavored IPA. Blistering juggernauts like "Red Light Fever," "Angel Dust," "Bloodlust," and "In League With Satan" really enhance the unapologetic assertiveness of the maltiness and hops. Both album and beer bring big flavor to the table with an aggressive joy and exuberance you would expect from an IPA and a crazed metal outfit!
