May 27th, 2013 - Beyond Hell And Above Elephants?

Good evening!  The Meista here with a pairing honoring my Danish heritage... I'm drinking an Elephant from Carlsberg Danmark A/S and listening to Volbeat's 2010 album, "Beyond Hell/Above Heaven"!  This pairing goes out to my pals, Jerm and Gina, and Fischbox!!  Cheers!!

Volbeat was formed in Copenhagen, Denmark in 2001 when Dominus founder Michael Poulsen got fed up with the death metal music scene and decided to start a new project that would focus on fusing rockabilly and metal.  On "Beyond Hell/Above Heaven," Volbeat (named after a Dominus album) combines  rock and roll, heavy metal, schlager, and rockabilly with influence from such musicians as Elvis Presley, Johnny Cash, Social Distortion, and Motorhead.  Their line-up on "Beyond Hell/Above Heaven" consisted of vocalist and guitarist Poulsen, bassist Anders Kjølholm, guitarist Thomas Bredahl , and drummer Jon Larsen along with guest vocalists and musicians Mark “Barney” Greenway of Napalm Death, Michael Denner of Mercyful Fate/King Diamond, Mille Petrozza of Kreator, Henrik Hall of Love Shop, and Jakob Øelund of Taggy Tones.  (Of the guest musicians, Poulsen stated in an interview, "I’m very very proud to have these fine gentlemen with me, since they inspired me a lot for a long time.")  In an interview in 2010, Poulsen explained the meaning of the albums title as: "We don’t belong or believe in neither heaven nor hell. So if we go beyond hell, we will make heaven look like hell, and if we go above heaven, we will make hell look like heaven. Heaven and hell is something we create in our minds and personal self-created demons come out of that."  Combining catchy hooks and riffs, amazing guitar work, and rich tones with a powerful sonic attack, Volbeat delivers a GREAT rock and roll album that will surely satisfy metal heads, rockers, and rockabilly fans!

To match Volbeat's sound and delivery, I needed a brew that had some bite, but also could be thrown back easily to complement the speed and melodic aggression of the music... thus, the Elephant Beer!  Similar to malt liquor, the Elephant from Carlsberg Danmark A/S is a high-point Euro lager.  It pours a nice golden amber with a very thin white head and lots of rising bubbles.  The Elephant has a strong yeast and alcohol aroma with some light hops hidden in there as well.  The flavor is somewhat sharp and crisp initially with a sweet finish.  There are notes of yeast, strong malt, and some soft golden apple notes on the back of the tongue.  The danger with this brew is that it is incredibly refreshing and drinkable and deceptively light, but measures in at 7.2% ABV.
