Hello and welcome! This silly blog is an experiment in my own vanity in terms of my opinions on craft beer and music and various pairings (much like you would do with food). I definitely want to express that I am no expert in terms of brewing or in musical composition. This is merely opinion, my opinion (sometimes clouded by consumption) with regards to enjoyable beers and music. Cheers! June 19th, 2013 - It's All In The Numbers!
Alright craft beer and true metal fans... I'm going all out tonight!! How about a double pairing of Epic Brewing Company's 825 State Stout (Release #29), Black Sabbath's new album, "13 (Deluxe Edition)," and Motörhead's s album, "1916"?!? I know... crazy, right? Numbers, numbers, and more numbers! And, no question, this pairing is dedicated to my metal bro in arms, Jerm... cheers buddy!!
So, where the hell do we start with this double pairing? How's 'bout the beer? Epic's 825 State Stout is brewed with Ultra Premium Maris Otter as a base malt, Barley Flakes, Briess Black Malt, Weyerman Munic Malt 1, Roasted Barley, and Chocolate Malt... oh yeah! The 825 State pours a (doom metal) ink black with a frothy, mocha head. The nose is a bed of soil, a blissful and organic combination of cocoa and Columbian coffee. Flavors of roasted dark chocolate, sweet toffee, rich mocha, earthy and smoky coffee, mushy and over-roasted marshmallow, and roasted hazel nuts abound! And there is nothing "clean" about the finish either... it is dirty and sludgy and smoky and sexy and brilliant! I feel almost abused by drinking this amazing brew... in a very, very good way!! \m/ \m/
Black Sabbath's "13"... this is absolute genius... no, seriously... I'm not kidding! This is like listening to/discovering the first Black Sabbath album all over again!! Geezer, Iommi, and Ozzy are definitely not growing old gracefully... they have channeled their early 1970s selves with "13". This is powerful, profound, and heavy-duty doom metal, sludgy as all-get-out shit!! Iommi's guitar work alone has devastated me! I'm seriously on the verge of tears listening to this wonderful masterpiece! You MUST own "13"! This is the album both you and I have been waiting for!!! From the sludgy opening notes of "End Of The Beginning" to the rocking power of "Pariah," this album is the real deal! I won't even try to insult your intelligence by describing these songs... amazing stuff... just go get it!!!
This is a big beer... so half goes to "13" and half goes to "1916"...
Motörhead's "1916"... released in 1991, is the band's 9th album. I remember seeing them perform on David Letterman when this album was released back in '91... badass!! This is aggressive, heavy as hell, good-time rockin' Motörhead at their best!! This album was actually nominated for a Grammy in 1992... yes, really! Lemmy is his usually bad-ass singing/bass-playing self while Michael Burston (aka Würzel) and Phil "Wizzö" Campbell shred the hell outta their guitars and Phil "Philthy Animal" Taylor pounds the hell outta his drums! Songs like "The One To Sing The Blues," "I'm So Bad (Baby I Don't Care)," "Angel City," "Make My Day," and "Ramones" are classic rockers. The album ends with the rather haunting title track, which examines the hellish fighting of World War I through the eyes of a teen soldier. All in all, a wonderfully rich, complex, and rocking album!
Cheers you bastards... love from the "slightly" intoxicated Meista!! Bang your heads, raise you fists, and raise your fuckin' beers!! :) And pay my buddy Kevin at the Heavy Metal Shop a visit and pick up "13" and "1916"!! www.heavymetalshop.com
