July 30th, 2013 - Ale Of The Gods... Brew Of The Hammer!

Alright my metal brethren of brews... put on your Viking helmets, grab your goblets, and cozy up to the hottest Valkyrie you can find... 'cause the Meista is channeling his Scandinavian bloodlines and taking you on a Viking voyage!  I'm pairing Amon Amarth's newest album, "Deceiver Of The Gods" (Deluxe Edition) and Thor's Equinox Limited Release Belgian-Style Dark Ale from Odin Brewing Company!!  This pairing goes out to my nephew Michael and my friend Jason Parkey... Skål buddies!!

"Deceiver Of The Gods" was released June 25th, 2013 and is the 9th studio album by Swedish melodic death metal monsters Amon Amarth!  Their "faering" is made up of Johan Hegg (lead vocals), Johan Söderberg (guitars), Olavi Mikkonen (guitars), Ted Lundström (bass), and Fredrik Andersson (drums) along with the wonderful Messiah Marcolin (ex-Candlemass) with guest vocals on the song "Hel."  As with other Amon Amarth outings, thematically "Deceiver Of The Gods" examines Norse mythology and Viking lore.  It is also a no-holds-barred, in-your-face album of pure metal aggression and power... befitting to any clan of Viking warriors (or weekend beer drinkers)!  Hegg's growling vocals are brutal, guttural, and a great foil to the soaring and ethereal guitar work of Söderberg and Mikkonen!  And the rhythm section of Lundström and Andersson is a stampeding army marching down on your village... thunderous, bombastic, and unstoppable!  Songs like the title track, "As Loke Falls," "Shape Shifter," "Blood Eagle," "We Shall Destroy," "Hel," and "Warriors Of The North" are richly intoxicating songs of might, aggression, and unbridled power!  The Deluxe Edition of the album includes a bonus EP disc, "Under The Influence," which is made up of 4 original tracks ("Burning Anvil Of Steel," "Satan Rising," "Snake Eyes," and "Stand Up To Go Down") done in the style of Judas Priest, Black Sabbath, AC/DC, and Motorhead.

Thor's Equinox from Odin Brewing Company is a Belgian Dark Ale.  It pours a deep burgundy with a frothy, stick-to-your beard, off-white head that leaves strong, snowdrift lacing.  The nose is a co-mingling of dark fruits, brown sugar, and light bourbon aromas with a hint of vanilla.  Sweet and sticky, the body is thick and full and makes its presence known.  The flavor is all dark malts, raisins, and soft toffee.  There are also some soft banana notes and a boozy kick... like thump from Thor's Mjölnir or Andersson's bass pedal!  The character of Thor's Equinox is perfect for the complexities, boldness, and explosiveness of the power that is Amon Amarth!!

I picked up this ass-kicking/head-banging album from the Heavy Metal Shop and you should too!!  Visit my buddy Kevin at www.heavymetalshop.com... tell him Brews and Tunes sent ya!

Skål!!
