August 16th, 2013 - PSA Dea.d. Alive!

Good afternoon!  How about a little gothic horror punk and an extra hoppy IPA to start off your weekend?  That's right... I'm pairing a Dempsey's Petaluma Strong Ale (PSA) Extra IPA from Dempsey's Restaurant and Brewery with the Misfits' "Dea.d. Alive!"  Hells yes!!

Released on February 5, 2013 by Misfits Records, "Dea.d. Alive!" is live album from the tour for 2011's "The Devil's Rain."  It does not feature any songs from Danzig-era albums and is mostly made up of "The Devil's Rain" tracks.  "Dea.d. Alive!" captures the Misfits in concert on All Hallows' Eve, in the center of Times Square, New York City with a few select tracks from the band's encore set at their hometown show in New Jersey. The horror punk power trio known as the Misfits is made up of Jerry Only (vocals, bass guitar), Dez Cadena (vocals, guitar), and Eric "Chupacabra" Arce (drums) and the bring it big time on this album!

Here is the amazing track list from these shows:
  1. "The Devil's Rain"
  2. "Vivid Red"
  3. "Land of the Dead"
  4. "Curse of the Mummy's Hand"
  5. "Cold in Hell"
  6. "Dark Shadows"
  7. "Death Ray"
  8. "Shining"
  9. "American Psycho"
  10. "Dig Up Her Bones"
  11. "Scream!"
  12. "Helena"
  13. "Science Fiction/Double Feature"
  14. "Saturday Night"
And how about that AMAZING cover art by science fiction/horror artist Jason Edmiston?!  FANTASTIC!!  I had the privilege of meeting Mr. Edmiston a few years ago at WonderCon in San Francisco... a gentleman and a scholar!  Check out his wonderful work at https://www.facebook.com/Jason.Edmistons.Artbook

Like the Misfits, Dempsey's PSA is a double IPA that has a lot of character!  It pours a cloudy, copper-amber with an abundantly frothy head that displays thick lacing with great sustain.  The nose is characterized by a nice punch of bitter hops upfront with a malty backbone.  It is a perfect blend of piney notes and baked bread.  The mouthfeel is thick and chewy, a rather heavy-bodied feel for an IPA... which is great for the rockabilly-like punk power of the Misfits!  Like the aromas, the flavor is a nice blend of hoppy bitterness and sweeter, breadier malts.  There are notes of pine and summer grass along with big bready maltiness.  It finishes with a nice bitter bite.  Good stuff!!

Cheers rockers and boozers!
