October 20th, 2013 - "I Don't Mind You Coming Here" And Drinking All My Black Lager

Good morning!  The Meista here pairing a couple of Boston's originals: post-punk, "new wave" rockers The Cars and their self-titled, debut album along with a Samuel Adams Black Lager from Boston Beer Company... in celebration of the Boston Red Sox pennant win last night of course!  This pairing goes out to my Red Sox super fan brother, Dain-o and to my late grandfather, Jimmy Patterson... a true New Englander and Red Sox fan.  Cheers!

The Cars would help define the sound of the 1980s with their guitar-driven hooks and new synth-oriented pop sound.  Released on June 6, 1978, the eponymous debut studio album launched the band into immediate stardom.  The album remained on the charts for 139 weeks with 6 tracks: "Just What I Needed," "My Best Friend's Girl," "Good Times Roll", "You're All I've Got Tonight", "Bye Bye Love", and "Moving in Stereo" all receiving heavy radio rotation.  Ric Ocasek's unique vocal style, Elliot Easton's dynamic guitar work, Greg Hawkes keyboard, percussion, and sax work, David Robinson's drumming, and Benjamin Orr vocals and bass really helped define not only the sound of The Cars, but the sound of a generation of musicians.   The Cars self-titled debut album is a must for any rock and roller and fan of good-time music!

Like Shane Victorino's grand slam in the bottom of the 7th and the chorus of "Don't Cha Stop", the Samuel Adams Black Lager is surprisingly sweet.  A Schwarzbier ("shvahrts-beer"), the Samuel Adams Black Lager is a far maltier version than I've ever had before.  It pours a deep, dark mahogany with lots of thick beige head displaying good retention. The nose is a complexity of dark roasted malts, coffee, and cocoa notes.  Exceptionally smooth, this full-bodied ale has a sticky and thick mouthfeel, yet with a nice crispness as well.  The flavor is earthy and sweet.  There are notes of mild and creamy coffee, cocoa powder, honey-wheat bread, molasses, and caramels.  Like The Cars and last night's game, the Samuel Adams Black Lager has a nice, clean finish.  :)

Cheers!
