January 5th, 2014 - Fire Rock Revölution

Alloha!  The Meista here with another rockin' pairing for you my friends!  Today I'm listening to "The Revölution By Night" by Blue Öyster Cult (BÖC) and enjoying a Fire Rock Pale Ale from Kona Brewing Company from Hawaii!  I'm these for two reasons: 1) I think the "poppier" sound BÖC embraced during this album's era goes well with the crispness of the Fire Rock and 2) a friend of mine from college saw BÖC in Hawaii in 1983 on "The Revölution By Night" tour!  Cheers Matt... wherever you are now!

"The Revölution By Night" was released in 1983 and is the 9th studio album by American hard rock band BÖC.  Characterized by straight-ahead rock and pop elements, catchy hooks, and exceptional guitar solos by Donald 'Buck Dharma' Roeser.  The album also included guest musician Aldo Nova on guitar and synthesizers on "Take Me Away" as well as writing collaborations with punk goddess Patti Smith, sci-fi author Richard Meltzer, Ian Hunter (Mott The Hoople), and Neal Smith (original Alice Cooper band).  Songs like "Take Me Away," "Eyes on Fire," "Veins," "Shadow Of California," "Dragon Lady," and the mellow "Light Years Of Love" may be poppier than previous albums, but there is still that BÖC rock and roll fire and brilliant musicianship and delivery by the great Eric Bloom (vocals, guitars), virtuoso Buck Dharma (lead guitars, vocals), multi-talented Joe Bouchard (bass, electric and acoustic guitars, vocoder, vocals), the late Allen Lanier (piano, keyboards), and Rick Downey (drums).  (Sadly "The Revölution By Night" would mark the first album by BÖC to not feature all of the band's classic members.  Drummer Albert Bouchard had been replaced by Downey after Bouchard had been released during the previous album ("Fire of Unknown Origin") tour due to growing tensions with the other members.)

Kona Brewing Company's Fire Rock Pale Ale is a crisp, refreshing, and very solid pale.  Kona Brewing employs Galena, Cascade, Mt.Hood hops along with "unique blend of specialty roasted malts" to help create a very well-balanced, very smooth brew.  It pours a bright orange copper with white 1/2 finger head.  The nose is a blend of light malts and light citrusy hops.  There are notes of biscuit, grapefruit, and lemon.  Light-bodied, the mouthfeel is crisp, dry, and slightly bitter.  As with the nose, the flavor is a nice blend of malty biscuit and citrus hop notes.  There are notes of grapefruit, pine, sweet caramel, and a hint of mango.  The Fire Rock Pale Ale is definitely a refreshing and crisp ale that works perfectly with the rockin' pop stylings of "The Revölution By Night"!

Okole maluna!!
