February 14, 2014 - Massacring Valentine's Day With Metal And Ale!

A special Valentine's Day pairing for you... Brews and Tunes style!  The Meista here pairing MotörheadGirlschool's "St. Valentine's Day Massacre" EP with a Steinlager from New Zealand Breweries Limited!  This one is for my wife... love ya baby!!!

"St. Valentine's Day Massacre" EP was a collaborative effort between Motörhead and Girlschool and was released in February of 1981.   Girlschool's manager thought it would be great if the two bands should record a single together.  The result was a kick-ass, 3-track EP, where the 2 bands joined forces to cover a Johnny Kidd & The Pirates' track, "Please Don't Touch" and then cover 1 song each others.  Motörhead performed a fantastic rendition of Girlschool's "Emergency".  And Girlschool performed an equally fantastic rendition of Motörhead's "Bomber"! Girlschool drummer Denise Dufort played on all three songs as Motörhead's drummer Phil "Philthy Animal" Taylor was recovering from a neck injury sustained when playing a rousing game of "who can lift each other up the highest" with a large Irishman!  Haha!  That sounds like Philthy Animal!  Since the EP was released close to Valentine's Day, the two bands decided to go with a mobster themed cover, an obvious and humorous reference to the 1929 mob hit.  The combined bands played "Please Don't Touch" under the name Headgirl on the BBC's Top of the Pops to support the release of the EP on February 19th, 1981: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vAzxQEkBFfE!  Hell yes!!

The Steinlager from New Zealand Breweries Limited is a lager brewed in the style of the Euro Pales.  Similar to a Munich Helles, the Steinlager is characterized by a crisp, clean hop flavor backed by a solid, all-malt base.  It pours a slightly hazy, golden straw color with a rocky, white head.  The nose is pungent, hoppy, and rather skunky (like a Heineken), which had me a little worried, but the flavor is good.  It has a grainy, toasted bread base flavor with notes of grassy hops, herbal tea, and a hint of lemon.  I picked this particular beer for the "St. Valentine's Day Massacre" EP because it is crisp and refreshing and goes down easy... great for the fast-paced hard-rockin', kick-ass power of MotörheadGirlschool!!

Cheers lovers!!
