February 16th, 2014 - Pulling The Trigger Of Provo Girl's Love Gun

Let's take a hard rockin' ride on the way-back machine today for a pairing of the 1977 album "Love Gun" by KISS and a Provo Girl Pilsner from the Utah Beer Cooperative (Squatters Brewery)!

Released on June 17th, 1977, "Love Gun" is American hard rock band KISS' 6th studio album. At the time of the albums release, a Gallup poll indicated that KISS was the most popular rock band in America. "Love Gun" marks the first album by the band to feature lead vocal performances by all four band members, the first for lead guitarist Ace Frehley on the song "Shock Me".  (Incidentally, the song "Shock Me" was inspired by and electrical shock Frehley sustained during the "Rock And Roll Over" tour in 1976 that knocked him to the ground and delayed the show for 30 minutes!)  Anyway, the whole album is late '70s rock and roll goodness!  Every song ("I Stole Your Love", "Christine Sixteen", "Got Love For Sale", "Shock Me" "Tomorrow And Tonight", "Love Gun", "Hooligan", "Almost Human", "Plaster Caster", and "Then She Kiss Me", a gender-reversed cover of The Crystals' 1963 pop classic "Then He Kissed Me") is a foot-stomping, fist-pumping good time!  This is probably the last really great make-up era KISS album with the original line-up and maybe their heaviest of the '70s.  And man, Ace just tears it up on this album!!  (Interesting side note: the title song, "Love Gun" has been played on every KISS tour since its release!)

And speaking of a good time... the Provo Girl Pilsner is brewed in the Bavarian tradition of a Pilsner.  This award-winning ale is "generously hopped" with Magnum hops and then lagered for smoothness and drinkability.  It pours a clear golden amber with a 1-finger white head that leaves intricate and layered lacing.  The nose is fairly mellow with doughy bread and slight fruit esters.  There are notes of sourdough bread, spiced pear, and grassy noble hops.  Crisp, clean, and refreshing, the flavor is bready, spicy, and hoppy.  There are notes of freshly baked and buttered bread, biscuit, grassy hops, salt, and white pepper.  It finishes clean and crisp and leaves you wanting more... I do believe that I shall have another!

Zum Whol!!
