June 4th, 2014 - And In The Meantime... Witchfynde!

Alright old-school rockers, get ready to raise those glasses and horns!  The Meista here with a little more obscure than usual metal and craft brew pairing for ya today... "The Best Of Witchfynde" by Witchfynde and a Meantime Coffee Porter from Meantime Brewing Company Limited!

The Meantime Coffee Porter from Meantime Brewing Company Limited (sorry for the poor quality photo... didn't realize my flash was off) is a classic English Porter with coffee.  It pours a very dark (almost black) brown with a thin mocha head.  The nose is a combination of espresso and cocoa... and BIG espresso and cocoa!  There are notes of freshly brewed, dark roast coffee and cocoa bean.  Thick and full-bodied, the mouthfeel is sticky and chewy, and quite dry.  Intensely rich, the flavor is more akin to a coffee stout than a porter in my mind...err taste buds.  Like the nose, there are big coffee and dark chocolate flavors with just a little smokiness as well as some nice toffee flavors.  The Meantime Coffee Porter is a heavy duty brew that packs a punch... and speaking of heavy duty...

"The Best Of Witchfynde" is just that... the best recordings from the original albums by New Wave of British Heavy Metal (NWOBHM) band Witchfynde.  I purchased this rare gem with a gift card online.  Formed in Derbyshire, England in 1974, Witchfynde was one of the forerunners of the NWOBHM movement.  Heavily influenced by the occult and the hard rock sounds of bands like Armageddon, Black Sabbath, Budgie, Captain Beyond, and Deep Purple of the early 1970s, Witchfynde's musical approach and themes were a bit darker than some of their contemporaries (Angel Witch, Diamond Head, Tygers of Pan Tang, Witchfinder General, etc.).  Raw, aggressive, and pure metal, Witchfynde's songs are wonderfully rich and capture the true essence of the NWOBHM movement.  Track like "Give 'Em Hell", "I'd Rather Go Wild", "Crystal Gazing", "Cloak And Dagger", "Ready To Roll", "Stage Fright", "Moon Magic", and "Stay Away" are instant classics and songs that influenced the likes of Mercyful Fate, Metallica, etc. ... a MUST own for NWOBHM fans!!

Cheers and hails!!
