Good afternoon and happy Friday! The Meista here with another rockin' pairing for you my friends... I'm pairing a S1nist0r Black Ale from 10 Barrel Brewing Company and "The Wicked Symphony" by the amazing Tobias Sammet's Avantasia!
The S1nist0r Black Ale from 10 Barrel Brewing Company (outta Bend, Oregon with pub locations in Portland and Boise, Idaho) is a very tasty, very sessionable Schwarzbier brewed with German dehusked black malt and hops. The S1nist0r pours an ink black with a 1-finger mocha head that displays chunky lacing with good retention. The nose is characterized by cocoa and fruit ester. There are aromas of dark chocolate, mild coffee, and banana. Medium bodied with moderate carbonation, the S1nist0r's mouthfeel is somewhat slick, but still crisp and refreshing. Although very dark in appearance, the flavor is fairly mild and very drinkable. Sweet and malty, there are notes of cocoa, hazelnut, black malt, and soft banana. Released on April 3rd, 2010, "The Wicked Symphony" is the 4th full-length studio album by Edguy vocalist Tobias Sammet's ongoing power metal/rock opera project Avantasia. The album is the 2nd part of "The Wicked Trilogy" albums (which also includes "The Scarecrow" and "Angel Of Babylon"). Along with writing the album, multi-talented Sammet provides vocals, bass guitar, keyboards, and organ. He is joined by Miro (keyboards and orchestration), Sascha Paeth (guitars, keyboards, and bass), and Eric Singer (drums) as well as the talents of Bruce Kulick (guitar), Jens Johansson (keyboards), and the following guest vocalists: Jørn Lande (Jorn, Masterplan, Allen Lande), Michael Kiske (Helloween, Unisonic), Russell Allen (Symphony X, Adrenaline Mob, Allen Lande), Klaus Meine (Scorpions), Tim "Ripper" Owens (Winter's Bane, Judas Priest, Iced Earth, Yngwie Malmsteen's Rising Force, Dio Disciples), André Matos (Angra, Viper), Ralf Zdiarstek, and Bob Catley (Magnum). While Sammet's lyrics are usually more whimsical and zany with Edguy, the work on "The Wicked Symphony" is much darker and more cerebral. Combining elements of power metal, progressive metal, and symphonic rock, Avantasia provides bold, bombastic, and straight-ahead rocking tracks.
