September 13, 2019 - The Ample Destruction Of A Dying Light

Promo photo from High-Roller Records

Hello and happy Friday headbangers and artisan ale lovers!  Last weekend the mighty Jag Panzer played at Prog Power USA in Atlanta, Georgia.  I wasn't able to attend.  Rather than feel sorry for myself, I decided to rock out to their debut studio album and throw back some cold ones.  I paired a wonderfully tasty Dying Light from TRVE Brewing Company in collaboration with Great Notion Brewing and the amazing and spun the groundbreaking "Ample Destruction" 30th Anniversary Boxset from kickass American power metal giants, Jag Panzer!!  Oh, hell yeah!!

Album Info:
  • Artist: Jag Panzer
  • Title: "Ample Destruction" 30th Anniversary Boxset
  • Recorded: Startsong Studios in Colorado Springs, Colorado
  • Release date: Originally released August 1984; remastered version released 2013 (1st full-length studio album by Jag Panzer)
  • Record company: Original version by Azra Records; remastered version by High-Roller Records
  • Production: Andrew Banks and Tom Gregor; co-produced by Jag Panzer
  • Album cover art: Keith Austin
  • Personnel: Mark Briody (guitars, keyboards, backing vocals), Harry "The Tyrant" Conklin (lead vocals), Rick Hilyard (drums), Joey Tafolla (guitars and backing vocals), and John Tetley (bass)
  • Additional musicians: Ian Tecee (keyboards)
  • Musical style: Heavy metal, power metal, speed metal
  • Sound: Powerful, unrelenting, rebellious, and pure metal, Jag Panzer's first official release is a juggernaut of complex power metal... especially considering how young these guys were at the time!   Conklin's vocals are massive... a huge range in the tradition of Dickinson and Halford! Hilyard and Tetley are a thunderstorm of rhythm and driving power!  And Briody and Tafolla lay down amazing, paint-peeling riff after riff after riff!
  • Major themes: War, death, destruction, power, aggression, violence, sex, evil, darkness, rebellion, etc.
  • Notes: I bought this boxset at a Jag Panzer show last summer in Colorado. It was the very last copy they had.  I was able to get each band member to sign it and Mark Briody's son was actually the guy who sold me album.  :)  As you can see, the boxset comes with two vinyl copies (red vinyl and a picture disc), a t-shirt, a poster, and a booklet with wonderfully interesting and detailed liner notes and photos from the early days of Jag Panzer!
  • Tracks:
  1. "Licensed To Kill"
  2. "Warfare"
  3. "Symphony Of Terror"
  4. "Harder Than Steel"
  5. "Generally Hostile"
  6. "The Watching"
  7. "Interlude"
  8. "Reign Of The Tyrants"
  9. "Cardiac Arrest"
  10. "The Crucifix"
  11. "Black Sunday" (bonus track)

  • Website: https://www.trvebrewing.com/ / https://greatnotion.com/
  • Brew: Dying Light
  • Style: American Wild Ale / Saison / Farmhouse Ale / Golden Ale
  • Serving: 12 ounce bottle
  • ABV: 6.1%
  • Ingredients: Mixed-culture golden ale with rousanne grape must
  • Pour: The Dying Light pours a cloudy, but bright golden-yellow hue with a bubbly, half-finger, white head that dissipates fairly quickly. leaving very little lacing.
  • Nose: The nose is very fruity, earthy, funky, tart, and slightly floral.  There are aromas of lemon juice and zest, white grape juice, dried apricot, light grains, horse blanket, wet leather, funky barnyard fruit, and a hint of rose perfume.
  • Taste: The taste of the Dying Light is very bright, fruity, earthy, and funky.  There are big notes of lemon juice, Chardonnay, dried apricot, grape, fruit leather, light oak, funky yeast, and a little white pepper in the finish.
  • Mouthfeel: Medium-bodied and well-carbonated, the mouthfeel is very crisp, somewhat tart, rather funky, and punchy with a dry finish.
Overall pairing: The Dying Light from TRVE Brewing Company is a wonderfully fruity, funky, and complex wild brew!  It is that wild yeast punch that pairs so well with the powerful metal brilliance of Jag Panzer's very underrated "Ample Destruction"... an album that is the definition of the word "metal"!!

Cheers and hails!!
