September 2nd, 2019 - Gore Of The Phantom Bride

Hello and happy Labor Day!  The Meista here today pairing a Belching Beaver Brewing Company Deftones Phantom Bride with "Deftones" by the Deftones!  Admittedly, I wasn't all that familiar with the Deftones' music, but in purchasing this tasty brew at one of my favorite watering holes (Slackwater), I thought I would check out the song the beer was named for and found the album to be interesting and intriguing.

Album Info:
  • Artist: Deftones
  • Title: "Deftones"
  • Recorded: 2014 through late 2015 at Megawatt Recordings in Studio City, California
  • Release date: April 8th, 2016 (studio album by Deftones)
  • Record company: Reprise Records
  • Production: Matt Hyde and the Deftones

  • Sound: At times atmospheric, at times almost chaotic, and always dynamic and layered, the album explores different musical styles and sometimes creates tension along with harmony between these styles.   In all, it is pretty rockin'!   In an interview at the time of release, Moreno described it as "a little more of a heady record" than the previous album."
  • Major themes: Life, pain, psychosis, desire, truth, anger, etc.  In describing the album, Moreno stated: "The songs have a lot of different moods.  [It is not a]happy record, [but] not a completely angry record."

  • Mouthfeel: Medium in body and moderately carbonated, the mouthfeel is crisp, yet sticky and smooth with a dry finish with lingering hoppy and fruity notes.

Overall pairing: The Belching Beaver Deftones Phantom Bride is a complex, yet very drinkable brew... obviously the perfect companion for the intricate and mesmerizing tracks on "Gore"!  Those bright, citrusy, and fruity notes got great with overall punch while the breadier and earthier notes go great with the atmospheric tones!

Cheers!!
