November 1st, 2019 - Youthanasia... With Fruit (And Hops) On The Bottom

Good evening rattleheads and hops heads!  The Meista here with one more pairing for ya today... I'm getting crazy tonight to Megadeth's "Youthanasia" (25 years old today if you can believe it!) and a Fruit (And Hops) On The Bottom from Stillwater Artisanal Ales in collaboration with Hoof Hearted Brewing!  Hells yeah!!

Oh, this pairing goes out to my friends Sonia and Jason (thanks for the beer!) and Todd (we rocked out to "Youthanasia" driving home from Boise, Idaho 25 years ago brother!)  This pairing is also dedicated to the late Nick Menza.  Rest in Power!

Album Info:
  • Artist: Megadeth
  • Title: "Youthanasia"
  • Recorded: January through May 1994 at Phase Four Studios in Tempe, Arizona and Vintage Recorders in Phoenix, Arizona
  • Release date: November 1st, 1994  (6th studio album by Megadeth)
  • Record company: Capital Records
  • Production: Max Norman and Dave Mustaine
  • Album cover art: Hugh Syme
  • Personnel: David Ellefson (bass guitar and backing vocals), Marty Friedman (lead and rhythm guitars), Nick Menza (drums), and Dave Mustaine (lead vocals, rhythm and lead guitars)
  • Additional musicians: Jimmie Wood (harmonica on "Train Of Consequences" and "Elysian Fields")
  • Musical style: Heavy metal, hard rock with elements of speed metal and thrash metal
  • Sound: Following in the style of their previous album, "Countdown To Extinction", the sound on "Youthanasia" is more commercial and more in the lines of traditional heavy metal rather than the thrash aggression of early Megadeth albums.  That being said, it still is a kickass, rocking juggernaut of an album!  I think the real strength of this album is wonderfully crafted songwriting, Friedman's exceptional guitar work, and the cohesive tightness of the band as a whole.  Of the album, Mustaine once stated:""It's been called a thrash album, it's been called a rock album, and it's even been called an alternative album. To me it can only be called a Megadeth album. That should be enough."
  • Major themes: Socio-political criticism, states of conflict, chaos, violence, sexual abuse, addiction, death, power, corruption, abandonment, selling out the youth of America, etc.
  • Tracks:
  1. "Reckoning Day"
  2. "Train Of Consequences"
  3. "Addicted To Chaos"
  4. "A Tout Le Monde"
  5. "Elysian Fields"
  6. "The Killing Road"
  7. "Blood Of Heroes"
  8. "Family Tree"
  9. "Youthanasia"
  10. "I Thought I Knew It All"
  11. "Black Curtains"
  12. "Victory"

Brew Info:
  • Brewery: Stillwater Artisanal Ales (Baltimore, Maryland) in collaboration with Hoof Hearted Brewing (Marengo, Ohio)
  • Website: http://stillwater-artisanal.com/ and http://www.hoofheartedbrewing.com/
  • Brew: Fruit (And Hops) On The Bottom
  • Style: American Wild Ale / Sour India Pale Ale (IPA)
  • Serving: 16 ounce can
  • ABV: 6.0%
  • Ingredients: Citra and Mosaic hopped sour IPA brewed with milk sugar, vanilla extra, yogurt, strawberries, and bananas
  • Pour: The Fruit (And Hops) On The Bottom pours a hazy pale gold with a bright white head with and lacing.
  • Nose: The nose is fruity, citrusy, sweet, and tart.  There are aromas of lemon, stone fruit (apricot and peach), fresh strawberries, ripe banana, tart yogurt, and light biscuit.
  • Taste: The taste of the Fruit (And Hops) On The Bottom is citrusy, tropical, and tart.  There are notes of tart strawberries, soft banana in the front, lemon juice, cranberry, grapefruit, Greek yogurt, and a hint of wild honey.
  • Mouthfeel: Light to medium-bodied and moderately carbonated, the mouthfeel is frothy, juicy, crisp, and tart with a dry finish.

Overall pairing: The crisp, punchy, unique character of the Fruit (And Hops) On The Bottom is great for the chugging heavy metal onslaught that is Megadeth's "Youthanasia"!  Those tart and citrusy hop notes go great with Mustaine's bitter vocals and angry lyrics, while the sweeter tropical fruit and berry flavors compliment Friedman's guitar acrobatics and Menza's powerful drumming!

Cheers!!  Hails!!  Have a rockin' night!!
