November 1st, 2020 - Freeing The Dead Again

Buenas noches!  In celebration of el Día de los Muertos and in reverence to those we have lost, tonight I'm pairing "Dead Again", the wonderful and very underrated 6th album by horror metal pioneers Mercyful Fate and a Libre Imperial Mexican-Style Lager with Lime Peel from the fine folks at Proper Brewing Company!

Album Info:

  • Artist: Mercyful Fate
  • Title: "Dead Again"
  • Recorded: October through December 1997 at Nomad Recording Studio in Carrollton, Texas
  • Release date: 1998 (6th studio album by Mercyful Fate)
  • Record company: Metal Blade Records
  • Production: Sterling Winfield and Mercyful Fate
  • Album cover art: Kristian Wåhlin
  • Personnel: Sharlee D'Angelo (bass), Bjarne T. Holm (drums), Kim Bendix Petersen aka King Diamond (lead and backing vocals), Hank Shermann (guitars), and Mike Wead (guitars)
  • Musical style: Heavy metal, power metal, progressive metal, hard rock
  • Sound: More raw and aggressive than with previous Mercyful Fate albums, the sound is still that very complex and progressive MF sound!  The King's falsetto vocals are as haunting and insane as ever!  The rhythm section of D'Angelo and Holm is a driving and thunderous force!  And Shermann and Wead lay down some killer riffing!
  • Major themes: death, the occult, horror, evil, the devil, fear, darkness, vampires, lust, etc.
  • Tracks:
  1. "Torture (1629)"
  2. "The Night"
  3. "Since Forever"
  4. "The Lady Who Cries"
  5. "Banshee"
  6. "Mandrake"
  7. "Sucking Your Blood"
  8. "Dead Again"
  9. "Fear"
  10. "Crossroads"

Brew Info:

  • Brewery: Proper Brewing Company (Salt Lake City, Utah)
  • Website: http://www.properbrewingco.com//
  • Brew: Libre Imperial Mexican-Style Lager with Lime Peel
  • Style: Mexican Pilsner
  • Serving: 16 ounce can
  • ABV: 7.1%
  • IBUs: 20
  • Pour: The Libre pours a cloudy bronze-amber with a thick and frothy, off-white, 1-finger head with good retention and lots of sticky, sudsy lacing.
  • Nose: The nose is malty, grainy, with a hint of citrus.  There are aromas of freshly baked wheat bread, oats, barley, lime zest, and a hint of honey and soft caramel.
  • Taste: The taste of the Libre follows the nose with malty, bready, and citrusy flavors with very low bitterness.  There are multi-grain bread, cracked wheat, crackery biscuit, lime juice and zest, lemons zest, light spicy herbs, and soft caramel.
  • Mouthfeel: Medium-bodied and well-carbonated, the mouthfeel is crisp and  with a very dry and clean finish.

Overall pairing: Both the complexity of flavors and the overall drinkability of  Proper's tasty Libre work perfectly with the aggression, musical prowess, and metal integrity of Mercyful Fate's killer "Dead Again"!  As with the brew, the album provides its audience with very complex notes and artistry.

Salud and hails to the fallen!!
