January 23rd, 2022 - A Pumpkin Spice Latte For The Scum

Hello there!  The Meista here getting heavy and aggressive today with "Scum", the debut album by grindcore masters Napalm Death and a festive and surprisingly good Spice Latte from the fine folks at Pipeworks Brewing Company!

  • Musical style: Grindcore, hardcore punk
  • Sound: A seminal extreme metal album, "Scum" hails as probably the very first grindcore album recorded.  It is fast, furious, aggressive, primitive, and raw as hell.
  • Major themes: With thoughtful, critical, and sometimes humorous socio-politically charged lyrics, themes on "Scum" include fascism, greed, oppression, rebellion, deceit, commercialism, consumerism, hate, anarchy, etc.
  • Notes: Oddly enough, the two sides of the "Scum" record were recorded by two completely different lineups (apart from Mick Harris) about a year apart.  According to the Guinness Book of World Records, the song "You Suffer" is the shortest song ever recorded.
  • Tracks:
Side 1:
  1. "Multinational Corporations"
  2. "Instinct Of Survival"

Brew Info:
  • Brewery: Pipeworks Brewing Company (Chicago, Illinois)
  • Website: https://pdubs.net/
  • Brew: Pipeworks Spice Latte
  • Style: Spiced American Pale Ale (APA) / Pumpkin Beer
  • Serving: 16 ounce can
  • ABV: 6.8%
  • Ingredients: Oat Ale with pumpkin puree, Dark Matter coffee, milk sugar, vanilla, and pumpkin spices (cloves, nutmeg, and cinnamon).
  • Pour: The Pipeworks Spice Latte pours a clear, orange-gold color with a thin, off-white head that fades rather quickly and leaves virtually no lacing.
  • Nose: The nose is characterized by roasty, spicy, vegetal, and sweet aromas.  There are notes of toasted grains, roasted coffee beans, fresh pumpkin, vanilla bean, cream, nutmeg, cloves, cinnamon, and soft caramel/toffee.
  • Taste: The taste of the Pipeworks Spice Latte follows the nose with lots of roasty, toasty, spicy, and sweet flavors.  There are notes of light roasted coffee, pumpkin pie, whipped cream, vanilla, sweet biscuit, cinnamon, clove, nutmeg, ginger, and light toffee.
  • Mouthfeel: Medium-bodied with moderate carbonation, the mouthfeel is with slightly bitter finish with lingering coffee notes.

Overall pairing: The Pipeworks Spice Latte is roasty, slightly sweet, and spicy brew... a great foil to the very raw, aggressive, in-your-face energy that is early Napalm Death!  I also thought the album art and beer label colors and imagery worked well together.  :)  'Nuff said!

Cheers!!
