February 11th, 2022 - Crossing Over On Some Driftwood

Hello and happy Friday craft brew lovers, punks, and thrashers!  The Meista here today pairing a crisp, unique, and tasty Driftwood Coconut Lager from Uinta Brewing Company and "Crossover", the kick-ass 3rd album by the legendary Dirty Rotten Imbeciles (D.R.I.)!  Hell yeah!

Album Info:
  • Artist: D.R.I.
  • Title: "Crossover"
  • Recorded: Late 1986 to early 1987 at Stagg Street Studio in Van Nuys, California and Track Record in Los Angeles, California
  • Release date: March 9th, 1987 (3rd full-length studio album by D.R.I.)
  • Record company: Death Records
  • Production: Spike Cassidy and Bill Metoyer
  • Album cover art: Sam Leyja
  • Personnel: Kurt Brecht (vocals), Spike Cassidy (guitars and bass), Felix Griffin (drums), and Josh Pappé (bass)
  • Musical style: Crossover thrash metal
  • Sound: Fast and fiery with lots of humor and deadly serious intensity, "Crossover" was a game-changer!  Although the vocals are great and the guitars completely rip, I think in many ways Griffin's drumming is the really driving force of this album, but great stuff all around!
  • Major themes and subjects: Rebellion, revenge, society, politics, anti-religion, anti-war, freedom, daily life, death, etc.
  • Tracks:
  1. "The Five Year Plan"
  2. "Tear It Down"
  3. "A Coffin"
  4. "Probation"
  5. "I.D.K.Y."
  6. "Decisions"
  7. "Hooked"
  8. "Go Die!"
  9. "Redline"
  10. "No Religion"
  11. "Fun And Games"
  12. "Oblivion"

Brew Info:
  • Brewery: Uinta Brewing Company (Salt Lake City, Utah)
  • Website: http://uintabrewing.com/
  • Brew: Driftwood Coconut Lager
  • Style: American Lager
  • Serving: 12 ounce can
  • ABV: 6.5%
  • IBUs: 20
  • Ingredients: 2-Row, Pilsner, Vienna, Carapils, and Victory malts with Hallertau, Sabro, and Wakatu hops, and coconut
  • Pour: The Driftwood pours a hazy golden-yellow with a thin, eggshell white head that dissipates to a thin film with light lacing.
  • Nose: The nose is nutty, grainy, herbal, zesty, and slightly sweet.  There are aromas of freshly cut coconut, lime juice, lime zest, light herbs, and crackery biscuit.
  • Taste: The taste of the Driftwood follows the nose with lots of coconut, crackery grain, a splash of kaffir lime, grassy hops, and light herbal flavors.
  • Mouthfeel: Light-bodied with good carbonation, the mouthfeel is very crisp and smooth with a dry, clean finish.

Overall pairing: The Driftwood Coconut Lager from Uinta Brewing is a very crushable and unique brew... perfect for the fast-paced aggression and punk intensity of D.R.I.'s classic "Crossover" album!  The nutty coconut goes well with driving rhythms, while the zesty is great for the killer guitar riffs!  'Nuff said!

Cheers!!
