May 2nd, 2024 - A Rusty Hoe in the Gilded Palace of Sin

Hello rockers, rollers and craft brew lovers!  Happy Thursday!  Your drinkin' buddy the Meista here today pairing "The Gilded Palace Of Sin" by The Flying Burrito Brothers and a tasty Rusty Hoe Farmhouse Ale from Prodigy Brewing Company!  Oh, yes!

Album Info:

  • Title: "The Gilded Palace Of Sin"
  • Recorded: November through December 1968 at A&M Studios in Hollywood, California
  • Release date: February 6th, 1969 (1st studio album by The Flying Burrito Brothers)
  • Record company: A&M Records
  • Production: Henry Lewy, Larry Marks, and The Flying Burrito Brothers
  • Album cover art: Barry Feinstein (photography) and Tom Wilkes (art direction)
  • Personnel: Chris Ethridge (bass guitar, piano, and backing vocals), Chris Hillman (electric and acoustic guitars, mandolin, and harmony, lead, and backing vocals), "Sneaky" Pete Kleinow (pedal steel guitar), and Gram Parsons (acoustic guitar, piano, organ, and lead and harmony vocals)
  • Additional musicians: David Crosby (backing vocals on "Do Right Woman"), Jon Corneal (drums), Sam Goldstein (drums), Eddie Hoh (drums), the Hot Burrito Chorus (backing vocals on "Hippie Boy"), and Thomas "Popeye" Phillips (drums)
  • Musical style: Country rock with elements of folk, gospel, rock and roll, and psychedelic rock
  • Sound: What do you get when a bunch of long-haired rocker freaks start playing honky-tonk and old-time country?  Expanding on the sound Parsons had created on The Byrds' groundbreaking 1968 album, "Sweetheart Of The Rodeo", with "The Gilded Palace Of Sin", The Flying Burrito Brothers wonderfully blend country music with rock.  Surprisingly, the album was not initially a commercial success.  However, over time, it has become incredibly influential and defined the country rock style that became so prevalent in the 1970s.
  • Major themes: Love, loss, heartbreak, deception, pain, sorrow, desire, sin, life, etc.
  • Tracks:
