April 12th, 2014 - A Frost Bitten Land

Gott kvøld my friends!  The Meista here with another killer metal and craft brew pairing... tonight I'm pairing "Land" by Týr and a Frost Bite IPA from Danish "gypsy brewery" To Øl!

Released in the U.S. on June 10th, 2008 through Napalm Records, "Land" is the 4th studio album by Faroese power metal/Viking metal/folk metal band Týr.  Based primarily on Nordic and Viking history and folklore, "Land" includes songs sung in Danish, English, Faroese, Icelandic, Norwegian, and Swedish.  The opening track, "Gandkvæði Tróndar" includes compelling  and emotional passages from Janus Djurhuus, the celebrated first modern Faroese poet.  Musically, "Land" is a powerhouse of metal integrity and artistry!  It combines wonderfully rich folk melodies and choruses with profoundly powerful and soaring guitar work.  Songs like "Sinklars Vísa", "Ocean", "Gátu Ríma", "Valkyrjan", "Middle Ages ballad Lokka Táttur", and the epic "Land" are both bombastic and .  The album also includes a re-recorded version of the song "Hail To The Hammer" which originally appeared on the band's debut album, How Far To Asgaard in 2002.  (A heavier version of the song "Valkyrjan" was re-recorded for Týr's latest album, 2013's "Valkyrja". )  This is one kick-ass metal album!!

Frost Bite IPA from To Øl is a seasonal holiday brew I was lucky enough to get my hands on last night at The Bayou (http://www.utahbayou.com/).  The Frost Bite pours a very hazy, copper-amber with a frothy, off-white head with strong retention and displaying intricate lacing.  The nose is characterized by piney hop and sweet citrus aromas.  There are aromas of grapefruit, orange, pine resin, and summer grass, and maybe a little pineapple as well.  Medium-bodied, the Frost Bite is slightly acidic and has a nice, crisp sharpness, but with some oiliness.  Like "Land", the initial flavor is somewhat biting, but is coupled by some well-balanced sweetness.  There are notes of sweet caramel malts, bitter hops, juicy grapefruit, mango, and juniper.  It finishes fairly clean, but with some pleasant lingering bitterness.  The Frost Bite is a great IPA that works wonderfully well with the brilliance of Týr's "Land"!!  Learn more about To Øl at http://to-ol.dk/home/

Hails... and Skál!!
