Hello and welcome! This silly blog is an experiment in my own vanity in terms of my opinions on craft beer and music and various pairings (much like you would do with food). I definitely want to express that I am no expert in terms of brewing or in musical composition. This is merely opinion, my opinion (sometimes clouded by consumption) with regards to enjoyable beers and music. Cheers! July 3rd, 2014 - Little Kings Crimson... or... Happy With [The Beer] You Have to Be Happy With
Hello friends! The Meista here with a quick, "little" pairing for you... I'm going with King Crimson's "Happy With What You Have To Be Happy With" EP and a (literally) Little Kings Cream Ale from Hudepohl-Schoenling Brewing Company!
Released on October 8th, 2002, "Happy With What You Have To Be Happy With" was the subsequent 33 minute EP to the album "The Power To Believe". (The EP version of "Happy With What You Have to Be Happy With" is longer by one chorus and "Eyes Wide Open" is an acoustic version of the song.) The EP also includes 8 other tracks that do not appear on the full-length "The Power To Believe" album including several very short, electronically enhanced A Cappella numbers as well as tracks "Mie Gakure", "Potato Pie", "Clouds", and a wonderful version of "Larks' Tongues In Aspic (Part IV)". The band at the time was Adrian Belew (guitars and lead vocals), Robert Fripp (guitars), Trey Gunn (Warr guitars and bass guitars), and Pat Mastelotto (drums and percussion). Although short, the "Happy With What You Have To Be Happy With" EP is as compelling and artistically intriguing as any full-length work by King Crimson.
A great, little album deserves a great, little beer... the Little Kings Cream Ale is a 5.5% ABV, 7 ounce little brew from Hudepohl-Schoenling Brewing Company out of Cincinnati, Ohio. It pours a fairly clear honey-gold amber with virtually no head. The nose is very mellow with subtle aromas of toasted grains and mild noble hops. There is also a hint of biscuit and soft caramel. With mild carbonation, the Little Kings Cream Ale has a very smooth, very creamy mouthfeel. It goes down easy and clean. The flavor is very mellow and somewhat sweet with just a slight bitterness in the finish. There are notes of white grape, apple, corn, barley, grassy hops, and just a hint of pepper.
Cheers!
