Hello and welcome! This silly blog is an experiment in my own vanity in terms of my opinions on craft beer and music and various pairings (much like you would do with food). I definitely want to express that I am no expert in terms of brewing or in musical composition. This is merely opinion, my opinion (sometimes clouded by consumption) with regards to enjoyable beers and music. Cheers! August 15th, 2014 - Unbreakable Dortmunder!
Guten abend rockers, rollers, and brew lovers! The Meista here with another killer pairing for ya... tonight I'm going with "Unbreakable" by German power metal gods Primal Fear and a Dortmunder Export Lager from Bohemian Brewery!! Hell yeah!! And this pairing goes out to my Bulgarian metal pals Milena Todorova and Mishell Venkova ... prost and hails Milena and Mishell!!
Released on January 20th, 2012, "Unbreakable" is the 9th studio album by German power/speed metal band Primal Fear. Characterized by the profoundly powerful vocals of Ralf Scheepers along with the wonderfully fast-paced metal prowess of Magnus Karlsson (guitars and keyboards), Alex Beyrodt (guitars), Mat Sinner (bass, vocals, backing vocals, and production), and Randy Black (drums), Primal Fear delivers a richly textured and melodic power metal onslaught with "Unbreakable"! Musically, the album is a soaring, fast-paced, high-octane ride! Lyrically, the album delves into science fiction/fantasy, socio-political, and themes of unbridled head-banging metalness! Tracks like "Unbreakable (Parts 1 & 2)", "Strike", "Give 'Em Hell", "And There Was Silence", "Marching Again", "Blaze Of Glory", and "Night Of The Jumps" are brilliantly technical, brilliantly passionate metal monsters in the vein of Gamma Ray, Iron Maiden, and Judas Priest. I love this band!
For the power and might of Primal Fear's "Unbreakable" you need a solid and somewhat strong German brew! (The unplanned dual bird of prey imagery on the can and album cover worked out well too!) The Dortmunder Export Lager from Bohemian Brewery is a traditional German lager brewed in the tradition of the brewers from 19th century Dortmund, Germany. Dortmunders are traditionally characterized by a clean nature with a solid malt backbone. The same can definitely be said of the Dortmunder Export Lager. It pours a clear, deep golden color with a billowy and frothy white head with good retention and lacing. The nose is both sweet and biscuity with some grassy hop aromas like a Pilsner. There's a little bit of spice and a little fruit ester as well, though I cannot put a finger on the exact scents. A "firm and refined hop bitterness" (40 IBUs) is intertwined with a malty and grainy flavor. There are notes of grassy hops, cracker, biscuit, sweet corn, and soft caramel/toffee flavors. There's also a very slight booziness from the 6% ABV that gives the Dortmunder Export Lager a nice warming effect. The finish is very crisp and very clean. The Dortmunder Export Lager is a very solid, very rockin' brew... perfect for Primal Fear's "Unbreakable"!!
Prost... Zum Wohl!! Horns raised!!
