Hello and welcome! This silly blog is an experiment in my own vanity in terms of my opinions on craft beer and music and various pairings (much like you would do with food). I definitely want to express that I am no expert in terms of brewing or in musical composition. This is merely opinion, my opinion (sometimes clouded by consumption) with regards to enjoyable beers and music. Cheers! September 27th, 2014 - Hop Diggity Me Out!
Hey there! The Meista here today pairing "Dig Me Out" by Sleater-Kinney and a Hop Diggity Double India Pale Ale (DIPA) from Mother Earth Brew Company! This pairing goes out to my new pal Erika... cheers Erika!!
"Dig Me Out" is the 3rd studio album by Washington State indie pop/riot grrrl (1990s underground feminist punk rock movement) trio Sleater-Kinney. It was released on April 8th, 1997 through Kill Rock Stars Records. The album was the first to feature permanent drummer Janet Weiss. Along with Weiss on drums, the remainder of the trio was made up of founding members Carrie Brownstein (guitars and co-lead vocals) and Corin Tucker (co-lead vocals and guitars). (Brownstein now stars with co-developer Fred Armisen in the off-the-wall sketch comedy show Portlandia.) Guest musician Jessica Lurie provides saxophone on the song "It's Enough". Lyrically, "Dig Me Out" dealt with themes of sexism, heartbreak, loss, and survival from a more feminist vantage point. With influence from the Rolling Stones and the Kinks, musically speaking, the band took a more traditional rock and roll approach with a sound similar to early Throwing Muses.
Last night I had the pleasure of enjoying a very fresh Hop Diggity DIPA as recommended by my friend Erika at the Beer Hive here in SLC. (Thanks Erika!) Like the punk rock and roll sensibility of Sleater-Kinney, the Hop Diggity is a punchy and biting ale with lots of flavor. It pours a bright burnt-orange hue with a thin, off-white head. The nose is a big, dank resin punch in the face with aromas of pine and juicy orange along with more subtle notes of mango. lemon zest, and toffee. The flavor is all about the citrus and pine hop notes. At 8% ABV, the booziness is lower for a DIPA and well-masked by the citrus and pine flavors. It does become a little more prevalent as the beer warms though as do the sweeter malt notes. The mouthfeel is slick, oily, and somewhat sticky with a bitter, dry, and biting finish that lingers.
Cheers!!
