November 21st, 2014 - A Red IPA Painkiller!

Evenin' heavy metal maniacs and hop-heads!  Your drinking buddy the Meista here with another rocking pairing to help you get the weekend started off right!  Tonight I'm pairing a Red Lantern IPA from Pelican Brewing Company and Judas Priest's "Painkiller"!!

Released on September 3rd, 1990, "Painkiller" is the 12th studio album by the metal gods Judas Priest.  "Painkiller" is the first album to feature ex-Racer X drummer Scott Travis after the departure of long-time drummer Dave Holland in 1989.  Sadly, "Painkiller" is also the last album to feature Rob Halford on lead vocals until his mighty return on the 2005 album "Angel Of Retribution".  As they had done several times before, Priest reinvented themselves with "Painkiller", taking a much heavier approach than previous albums.  In fact, "Painkiller" is full-on speed/thrash metal in the vein of Megadeth, Metallica, and Slayer.  Glenn Tipton's and K.K. Downing's guitar work is a furious and blazing onslaught of speed metal goodness.  Ian Hill (bass) and Travis (drums) are a stampeding rhythm section of thunderous intensity.  And Halford is in a word, brilliant!  Songs like the title track, "Hell Patrol", "All Guns Blazing", "Metal Meltdown", "Nightcrawler", "A Touch Of Evil", and "One Shot At Glory" prove that the Judas Priest boys are indeed the metal gods!!

For an aggressive metal masterpiece like "Painkiller" you need a hoppy and biting ale!  The Red Lantern IPA from Pelican Brewing Company is a tasty brew that fits that bill.  It pours a copper/mahogany amber with thick and frothy white head that show good retention and intricate lacing.  The nose is a big, bold blast of citrus, fruit, and malts.  There are aromas of grapefruit, lemon, tangerine, a hint of strawberry, pine resin, cedar, and butter toffee.  The taste, like the nose is characterized by fruity citrus notes, pine, and sweeter malt.  There is an excellent balance between the malt and hops.  There's a lot of citrus/pine hop flavor along with sweeter and breadier malts.  At 6.4%, the Red Lantern isn't too big, but still big enough to have enough kick to accompany the might and fury of "Painkiller"!!

Cheers... hails!!
