December 30th, 2020 - A Small Deadly, Brown Space

Hello and happy Wednesday rockers and craft beer fiends!  The Meista here with another kick-ass pairing for ya today as part of my daily vacation pairings this week: Fight's sophomore (and final) album "A Small Deadly Space" and the rich and balanced flavors of a Grid City Brown Ale, another tasty offering from the fine folks at Grid City Beer Works!  Hell yeah!!

Album Info:
  • Artist: Fight
  • Title: "A Small Deadly Space"
  • Recorded: 1995
  • Release date: April 18th, 1995 (2nd full-length album by Fight)
  • Record company: Epic Sony
  • Production: Attie Bauw and John Baxter
  • Album cover art: R. Cratty
  • Personnel: Mark Chaussee (guitars), Rob Halford (vocals), Jay Jay (bass), Brian Tilse (guitars and piano), and Scott Travis (drums)
  • Musical style: Heavy metal, thrash metal, groove metal
  • Sound: This album took a beating from Priest fans and critics alike when it was originally released... and still does to some degree.  However, I think it is a wonderfully aggressive, dark, and intense album with great hooks, riffs, lyrics, and Halford's always amazing vocals!  In the grunge and alt rock landscape of the mid-90s, Fight was a beacon of metal hope.
  • Major themes: life, darkness, hate, rage, abuse, mental health, insanity, pain, depression, etc.
  • Tracks:
  1. "I Am Alive"
  2. "Mouthpiece"
  3. "Legacy Of Hate"
  4. "Blowout In The Radio Room"
  5. "Never Again"
  6. "Small Deadly Space"
  7. "Gretna Greene"
  8. "Beneath The Violence"
  9. "Human Crate"
  10. "In A World Of My Own Making / Psycho Suicide"

Brew Info:
  • Brewery: Grid City Beer Works (Salt Lake City, Utah)
  • Website: https://gridcitybeerworks.com/
  • Brew: Grid City Brown Ale
  • Style: Brown Ale
  • Serving: 16 ounce can
  • ABV: 4.6%
  • IBUs: 19.2
  • Ingredients: Fuggle hops with Harris Otter, Cara-Brown, Victory, Crystal 77, Pale Chocolate malts and flaked barley
  • Pour: The Grid City Brown Ale pours a fairly clear, deep mahogany brown with a frothy, off-white, 2-finger head with great retention and lost of intricate doily lacing.
  • Nose: The nose is toasty, roasty, malty, woody, and nutty.  There are aromas of hearty bread dough, dark toast, barley, cocoa, roasted walnuts, oak, and burnt toffee.
  • Taste: The taste of the Grid City Brown Ale follows the nose with lots of malty, bready, and nutty flavors.  There are notes of toasted whole grain wheat bread, biscuit, light chocolate, walnuts, and sweet caramel/toffee.
  • Mouthfeel: Medium-bodied and moderately-carbonated, the mouthfeel is very smooth with a dry, slightly nutty finish with minimal bitterness.

Overall pairing: Those rich, bready, and nutty well-balanced flavors of the Grid City Brown Ale pair perfectly with the rock and roll punch of Fight's "A Small Deadly Space"!  I also dig the way the can looks with the album art, the colored vinyl, and my guitar glass!  'Nuff said!

Cheers!!  Rock on!!
