March 18th, 2021 - The Utah Pale Ale Kills 'Em All!

Good evenin' and hails evil-doers and craft beer lovers!  The Meista here tonight pairing "Kill 'Em All", the ass-kicking debut album by the mighty Metallica and a very crisp and tasty Utah Pale Ale from my main man, Master Chad over at the Deseret Edge Brewery!  And this pairing is most definitely dedicated to Chad!  He first introduced me to this killer album when we were teenagers driving around O-Town in his mom's car.  I immediately went out the next day and bought a copy on cassette (the very one pictured here!)  And now fast-forward 30+ years later... I'm in my studio drinking Chad's beers and rocking out to the album remastered on vinyl!  How cool is that?!  Raising a pint to ya bro!  Hells yeah!

  • Sound: What can I say about this album that hasn't already been said thousands of times?  For me, this was the game-changer!  It is definitive thrash metal, perfectly combining that NWOBHM riffing with sonically explosive and fast-paced hardcore punk tempos!  It is the album that got me into thrash metal in the first place.  I will love this album 'til the day I die!

Brew Info:

  • Brewery: Deseret Edge Brewery at the Pub (Salt Lake City, Utah)
  • Website: http://desertedgebrewery.com/
  • Brew: Utah Pale Ale
  • Style: American Pale Ale (APA)
  • Serving: 12 ounce can
  • ABV: 5.0%
  • IBUs: 37
  • Ingredients: Pale, Munich, CaraMunich, and Honey malts with Cascade hops
  • Pour: The Utah Pale Ale pours a slightly hazy, bright copper-amber hue with a billowy and creamy 2-finger, eggshell white head with great retention and lots of intricate sudsy lacing.
  • Nose: The nose is a wonderful blend of citrusy, floral, earthy, and malty aromas.  There are notes of grapefruit rind, lime zest, wild flowers, freshly cut hay, barley, cracked wheat, light earthy honey, and soft caramel.
  • Taste: Like the nose, the taste of the Utah Pale Ale is citrusy, earthy, herbal, and malty.  There are notes of zesty grapefruit, orange pith, orange zest, black tea, barley, crackery biscuit, hints of soft caramel/toffee, and black pepper.
  • Mouthfeel: Medium-bodied and moderately carbonated, the mouthfeel of the Utah Pale Ale is very crisp, yet smooth with a very dry, slightly bitter, peppery, yet fairly clean finish.

Overall pairing:
The crushable hop bite of Desert Edge's
Utah Pale Ale (one of my all-time favorite brews) makes it a great companion to the thrashing metal punch of Metallica's headbanging juggernaut, "Kill 'Em All"!!  You can definitely crush a few of these delicious brews whilst thrashing about to this great album!  'Nuff said!

Cheers and hails!!  WRECK YER NECK!!
