June 7th, 2022 - ¡Salud! To The Budos Band II

Good evening rockers, rollers, and craft brew lovers!  Your drinkin' buddy the Meista here with another great pairing for you... a Salud Mexican Lager from Mazama Brewing and "The Budos Band II" by The Budos Band!  This one goes out to my friends Jason and Sonia... thanks so much for the killer album!  Cheers!

Album Info:

  • Artist: The Budos Band
  • Title: "The Budos Band II"
  • Recorded: 2007 in New York City, New York
Release date: August 7th, 2007 (2nd studio album by The Budos Band)
  • Record company: Daptone Records
  • Production: Gabriel Roth and Neal Sugarman
  • Album cover art: Manny Osou (photography) and Ed Vidarres (art direction)
  • Personnel: Vincent Balestrino (shekere and tambourine), Thomas Brenneck (guitar), John Carbonella Jr. (congas), Mike Deller (organ), Daniel Foder (bass), Cochemea Gastelum (tenor sax), Andrew Greene (trumpet), David Guy (trumpet), Rob Lombardo (congas and bongos), Brian Profilio (drums), Dame Rodriguez (cowbell, claves, and tambourine), Daisy Sugarman (flute), and Jared Tankel (baritone sax)
  • Musical style: Funk, jazz, soul, rock, Afrobeat, afro-soul, psychedelic rock
  • Sound: Combining multiple styles and genres, The Budos Band makes a powerful ang brilliant musical statement with their 2007 instrumental album "The Budos Band II".  It feels like the music you would find in an early 1970s action film or in a cool, seedy underground bar in Greenwich Village.  The musicianship is incredible, mesmerizing, and a blast to crank up!
  • Major themes: As it is an instrumental album, the themes are purely interpretive.  To me, the songs feel seductive, dangerous, and mysterious.
  • Tracks:
  1. "Chicago Falcon"
  2. "Budos Rising"
  3. "Ride Or Die"
  4. "Mas O Menos"
  5. "Adeniji"
  6. "King Cobra"
  7. "My Girl"
  8. "Origin Of Man"
  9. "Scorpion"
  10. "Deep In The Sand'

Brew Info:

  • Brewery: Mazama Brewing (Hillsboro, Oregon)
  • Website: https://mazamabrewing.com/
  • Brew: Salud
  • Style: Mexican Amber Lager
  • Serving: 12 ounce can
  • ABV: 5.0%
  • Pour: The Salud pours a clear, copper-amber hue with a thin white head with good retention and sustained lacing.
  • Nose: The nose is a blend of toasty, roasty, and sweet aromas.  There are aromas of bready malts, toasted barley, biscuit, light cereal grains, light apple, and caramel/toffee.
  • Taste: Malt-forward, the taste of the Salud is bready, toasty, and malty.  There are notes of toasted bread, sweet biscuit, a hint of corn, honey, light apple, and sweet toffee.
  • Mouthfeel: Light to medium-bodied with moderate carbonation, the mouthfeel is very smooth with a clean finish.

Overall pairing: The Mazama Brewing Salud is a malty, engaging, and very drinkable brew... a great pairing for "The Budos Band II"!  The malt-forward flavors go great with the heavy-duty horn section of the amazing Budos Band!

¡Salud!  Rock on!
