October 31st, 2024 - Cali Screamin' Bloody Gore

Good evening and a very happy Halloween to you, my pretties!!  Tonight, your ghoulish beer drinkin' pal the Meista is pairing Death's killer debut album, 1987's "Scream Bloody Gore" and a festive Cali Screamin' Pumpkin Vanilla Cream Ale from Mother Earth Brewing Company.  Hails!!

Album Info:

  • Artist: Death
  • Title: "Scream Bloody Gore"
  • Recorded: November 1986 at Music Grinder in Los Angeles, California
  • Release date: May 25th, 1987 (1st full-length studio album by Death)
  • Record company: Combat Records
  • Production: Randy Burns and Chuck Schuldiner
  • Album cover art: Edward Repka
  • Personnel: Randy Burns (percussion), Chris Reifert (drums), and Chuck Schuldiner (lead guitar, rhythm guitar, bass guitar, and vocals)
  • Musical style: Death metal
  • Sound: Created from the building blocks of thrash, punk, and traditional metal, Death created a whole new sound with "Scream Bloody Gore."  It is raw, brutal, and beautifully intense!  Schuldiner employed heavily distorted guitars, alternate/tremolo picking, an obsession with minor keys/atonality, machine gun-fast drumming, and a unique and brand-new way of approaching vocals in 1986 - growling!  And all this with complex song structures and multiple tempo changes!  There is an intensity, a raw energy with all of these songs that really had not been heard before... at least not to this degree and definitely not in this fashion.  Schuldiner seemed to channel the evil of Venom and Possessed, the dark rawness of Bathory, the insane aggression of Kreator, and the blistering speed of Slayer with each note!  (Sadly, Schuldiner died in 2001 from brain cancer.)
  • Major themes: With the speed of punk and the aggression of thrash, Death's lyrical focus (and what set them apart from other extreme metal/hardcore bands of the time) was on gore and horror film imagery.  Songs like "Zombie Ritual," "Mutilation," "Baptized In Blood," "Torn To Pieces," "Evil Dead," (obvious nod to the film) and the title track, "Scream Bloody Gore" all stemmed from Schuldiner's love of slasher, zombie, and monster movies.
  • Note: John Hand was credited on the album as the rhythm guitar player, but he did not actually play on album.
  • Tracks:
  1. "Infernal Death"
  2. "Zombie Ritual"
  3. "Denial Of Life"
  4. "Sacrificial"
  5. "Mutilation"
  6. "Regurgitated Guts"
  7. "Baptized In Blood"
  8. "Torn To Pieces"
  9. "Evil Dead"
  10. "Scream Bloody Gore"

Brew Info:

  • Brewery: Mother Earth Brew Company (Vista, California)
  • Website: http://motherearthbrewco.com/
  • Brew: Cali Screamin' Pumpkin Vanilla Cream Ale
  • Style: Cream Ale
  • Serving: 16 ounce can
  • ABV: 5.0%
  • IBUs: 55
  • Ingredients: Madagascar vanilla beans and pumpkin puree along with pumpkin baking spices
  • Pour: The Cali Screamin' pours a fairly clear golden-yellow hue with a head with good retention and sudsy lacing.
  • Nose: The nose is spicy, sweet, and malty.  There are aromas of freshly sliced pumpkin pie, earthy vanilla bean, nutmeg, cinnamon, all-spice, fresh cream, and light caramel.
  • Taste: The taste of the Cali Screamin' follows the nose with spicy, sweet, and malty flavors.  It tastes like fall... there are notes of pumpkin pie, cinnamon, nutmeg, vanilla, whipped cream, cream soda, cola, light caramel, and biscuity malts.
  • Mouthfeel: Light to medium-bodied with moderate carbonation and very low bitterness, the mouthfeel of the Cali Screamin' is very creamy and smooth with a sweet, yet dry and fairly clean finish.

Overall pairing:
With it being Halloween and with the ferocious speed, heaviness, and complexity of "Scream Bloody Gore", I felt I needed a beer that was a little spicy, seasonal, and unique.  The Mother Earth
Cali Screamin' is this beer tonight!  This one goes down easy and has lots of nice pumpkin spice flavor without being over the top.  And the beer label looks nice with the Repka's amazing album cover artwork!

Cheers and hails headbangers!!  Happy Halloween!!  Be safe out there!!
