October 18th, 2013 - Gambling My 90 Shillings With The Devil

Good afternoon!  Today I'm pairing a 90 Shilling Ale from Odell Brewing Company and "Gambling With The Devil" from German power metal legends Helloween!

A Scottish ale, 90 Shilling is ODell Brewing Company's flagship brew.  Medium-bodied, the 90 Shilling is a smooth and tasty amber ale.  It pours a thick and frothy 2-finger head with good sustain and pervasive lacing.  The nose is malty and sweet with a hint of peat.  There are notes of mild toffee, earthy soil or wood, and freshly baked wheat bread.  The flavor is malty, sweet, and a little woodsy.  There are light notes of brown sugar/maple syrup and stronger notes of caramel along with low to moderate hops bitterness in the back.  The finish is clean and slightly biting... perfect for rocking out to Helloween!!

Released in October of 2007, "Gambling With The Devil" is the 12th studio album by Helloween.  Darker than previous works, the "Gambling..." album is power metal at its finest... driven, aggressive, and fun as hell!  Andi Deris' vocals are fantastic as always!  He is gritty and soaring at the same time.  The guitar work of veteran Michael Weikath and Sascha Gerstner is amazing... inspiring, powerful, and fiery!  Bassist Markus Grosskopf delivers the goods as only he can... brutal, honest, and pure power!!  And Dani Löble's drum work is a mix of TNT, a summer thunderstorm, and a Mac truck!  Stand out tracks include: "Crack The Riddle," "Never Surrender," "Kill It," "Revolution," "The Saints," "Paint A New World," "The Bells Of The 7 Hells," and "Dreambound." Helloween's "Gambling With The Devil" is a fantastic metal album in the tradition of Iron Maiden, the Scorpions, and Dio.  And it goes great with a 90 Shilling Ale!!

Slainte!!
