November 9th, 2013 - A Live, Bootlegged Boston Ale

At the risk of pissing a few of you off, here goes nothing...  Before becoming a bunch of sell-out douche bags, Boston natives, Aerosmith were pretty damned heavy, very rockin', and pretty cool!  In memory of those bygone rocking days, I'm pairing their 1978 double live album "Live! Bootleg" with a Boston Beer Company Samuel Adams Boston Ale!

Nothing fancy, the Samuel Adams Boston Ale is just a solid, rockin' English-style ale... one of the very first craft brews ever released in the good ole U.S. of A.  It pours a slightly hazy, caramel-amber with a frothy, 2-finger head that displays decent lacing.  The nose is characterized by light aromas of fruity and earthier yeasts and paler malts... like a mellow wheat bread.  The flavor follows suit... a buttery, malty flavor that goes down easy with some nice malt and fall apple notes.  It has a smooth mouthfeel with a clean finish.  With that clean, easy-going flavor, the Samuel Adams Boston Ale is a great beer to go with the late '70s rocking stylings of Aerosmith!

"Live! Bootleg" was released in 1978. A fake bootleg, it draws from concerts performed throughout 1977 and 1978 as well as some earlier material.  Highlights include some wonderful live renditions of "Back In The Saddle" (probably their best song), "Sweet Emotion," "Toys In The Attic," "Walk This Way," "Sick As A Dog," "Dream On," and covers of the Beatles' "Come Together" and the Yardbirds' "I Ain't Got You" and "Train Kept A Rollin'".  This was back when this band had something to say, something to shove in you face, something heavy, relevant, and rocking!  No offense to you long-term Aerosmith fans, but this was probably the last great album they produced.  Fame, massive egos, commercialized songwriting, and excessive drug abuse has all but destroyed the integrity of this band.  At least I can still enjoy this vinyl gem with a frosty brew!  :)

Cheers!
