Hello and welcome! This silly blog is an experiment in my own vanity in terms of my opinions on craft beer and music and various pairings (much like you would do with food). I definitely want to express that I am no expert in terms of brewing or in musical composition. This is merely opinion, my opinion (sometimes clouded by consumption) with regards to enjoyable beers and music. Cheers! February 1st, 2014 - The Number 06 Angel Of Retribution And Cerné Speciální
Good evening my rocking and drinking friends!! The Meista here with another . Tonight I'm pairing a Full Sail LTD Series Recipe Number 06 with THE Metal Gods... Judas Priest's "Angel Of Retribution"!!
The Full Sail LTD Series Recipe Number 06 is a Black Bock or Euro Dark Lager. The LTD 06 is brewed as a Czech-style Cerné Speciální with 2 row Pale, Munich, Caramel, and Chocolate Malts and hopped with Santiam and Perle hops. It pours a very dark, very opaque deep mahogany with a half-finger, mocha head. The nose if earthy and complex (like the metal onslaught that is Priest!!). There are notes of freshly ground rich coffee, bittersweet cooking dark chocolate, and rich, black, and fertile soil. There is also a hint of black licorice and some mild, yet spicy hops notes. The flavor is a complex and balanced mix of the slightly sweet, the very heavy, and the very rich. There are notes of dark roasted coffee, Belgian chocolate, burnt toffee, and spicy herbs. Although it only comes in at 7% ABV, it tastes more like bigger ale (like an Imperial Stout) with a warm, boozy kick... with subtle alcohol flavor like bourbon or spiced rum. There's also some slight smokiness (that becomes more prevalent as it warms), which gives it a nice finish. The Full Sail LTD Series Recipe Number 06 is a very good, very aggressive dark lager... perfect for the sonic intensity that is Judas Priest's "Angel Of Retribution"!!
Raise those glasses and raise those horns!! 2005 saw the triumphant return of vocalist Rob Halford to the Priest fold and with it a new studio album (their 15th), "Angel Of Retribution". (Halford left Judas Priest after the release and tour of 1990's "Painkiller" album.) What I really love about this album is that Priest channeled themes, motifs, and atmosphere from their entire career, but without sounding corny or overly nostalgic. There are lyrical and musical nods and reference to previous works: "Worth Fighting For" is a sequel to 1981's "Desert Plains" from the "Point of Entry" album. "Demonizer" references "The Hellion/Electric Eye" from "Screaming for Vengeance" as well as "Painkiller" from the album of the same name. "Hellrider" makes reference to "Tyrant" from "Sad Wings Of Destiny". "Eulogy" references both "Stained Class" and "The Sentinel". And of course that killer classic Priest sound is ever present, but with a fresh, new feel!! Halford's vocal delivery is as good (if not better) as anything prior... his range is (in a word) AMAZING!! The dual lead/rhythm guitar work of Glenn Tipton and K.K. Downing is face melting goodness! Their sound is rich, complex, and heavy (just like the Full Sail LTD Series Recipe Number 06)!! And the battle drum thunder of the rhythm section (Ian Hill on bass and Scott Travis on drums) is a sonic punch to the gut! The album ends with the epic 13+ minute "Lochness"... a monster (pun intended) of a track! (Note: "Angel Of Retribution" was released as a DualDisc. The DualDisc format is like an old school vinyl record. Side A is a traditional CD, and Side B is a DVD. The DVD is a documentary titled "Reunited". It also contains the entire album in an enhanced audio format.)
Na Zdravi!! Hails!!
