Hello and welcome! This silly blog is an experiment in my own vanity in terms of my opinions on craft beer and music and various pairings (much like you would do with food). I definitely want to express that I am no expert in terms of brewing or in musical composition. This is merely opinion, my opinion (sometimes clouded by consumption) with regards to enjoyable beers and music. Cheers! February 1st, 2014 - A River Ale In Chiros
Good evening!! The Meista here with another killer power metal and artisan brew combo... "A Moment In Chiros" by melodic/power metal vocalist Lance King and a Deschutes River Ale from Deschutes Brewing Company!
The Deschutes River Ale from Deschutes Brewing Company is a somewhat mellow, but very a sessionable, crisp, clean, and refreshing American Blonde Ale. With ribbons of bubbles, the Deschutes River Ale pours a very hazy golden-orange amber with a half-finger white head that leaves trace lacing. The nose is definitely mellow, but citrus and light malts are still prevalent and even a hint of "farmhouse funk". There are soft notes of woodsy pine, tart grapefruit, and caramel as well as biscuit. Incredibly drinkable, the mouthfeel is somewhat sharp from the high carbonation, but it goes down easy and clean. The flavor is like the nose, mellow, but tasty and solid. There are floral citrus notes of orange, tangerine, subtle grapefruit, and lemon, along with sweeter, maltier caramel notes. There is a slight bitterness in the rather dry finish as well. All-in-all, the Deschutes River Ale is a great sessionable pale ale that works wonderfully well with the power metal brilliance of Lance King's "A Moment In Chiros"!
Concerning a man's spiritual journey and the so-called "11:11 time prompt phenomena," Lance King's "A Moment In Chiros" is an interesting, engaging, well-crafted work of art. From his website: "The album's concept is based on the 11:11 time prompt phenomena happening to over 75 million people around the world, Lance is one of these people, and has dived in deep to find more about what it’s all about. This album is one man's journey as a seeker of truth looking for answers to the world's greatest mysteries." For me as a skeptic and non-believer, (no offense Mr. King) the album is more just a really fantastic, straight-ahead, perfectly crafted melodic/power metal album. (Note: I may not be a believer, but I can respect his search for "truth".) Anyway, musically-speaking, "A Moment In Chiros" is a wonderfully constructed and inspiring album with soaring guitar riffs and hooks, a powerful and thunderously driving rhythm section, and of course King's amazing vocal range! Just listen to songs like "A Sense Of Urgency", "Awakening", "Manifest Destiny", "A Given Choice", "Dance Of Power", "Infinity Devine", and "Transformation"... brilliant! The guest musician list on the album includes: Jacob Hansen (Beyond Twilight, Invocator, Anubis Gate), Kim Olesen (Anubis Gate), Michael Harris (Darkology, Thought Chamber), Tore St. Moren (Jorn), Fred Colombo (Spheric Universe Experience), Markus Sigfridsson (Darkwater, Harmony), Kevin Codfert (Adagio), Michael Hansen and Shane Dhiman (Phonomik), Morten Gade Sørensen (Pyramaze, Wuthering Heights), and Elyes Bouchoucha, Malek Ben Arbia, and Anis Jouini (Myrath, Mistheria). If you are a fan of Dream Theater, Symphony X, Pagan's Mind, Queensrÿche, etc., I strongly suggest you check out the amazing voice and work of Lance King!
