March 15th, 2014 - Big Black Imperial Battlefields Forever!

Evenin' head bangers and craft ale drinkers!  The Meista here with a big pairing for you... and I mean f@#$ing  BIG!   Tonight I'm destroying my brain cells and eardrums with a Moab Brewery's Black Imperial IPA and "Battlefields Forever" by Big Business!  I just saw these bad-ass Big Business types open for The Sword a couple nights ago and was totally blown the hell away (especially by the drum work)!!  I bought this cd on my way out and haven't stopped listening since!  And this pairing goes out to my good buddy Jerry... cheers man!!  Good to rock out with you and Big Business the other night my friend!!  Safe travels back to Seattle!

Moab Brewery's Black Imperial IPA is a dark, rich, and hoppy concoction.  Moab Brewery employs Two Row barley, fresh Moab water, their house yeast, multiple Pacific Northwest hops, and finish this bad-boy off with a dry hopping process.  It is then fermented in American oak barrels and bottle conditioned for optimum fermentation and taste.  It pours a deep, opaque chestnut brown with a massive frothy, cream-colored, 2-finger head with strong, insanely intricate and sustained spider web lacing throughout.  The nose has a nice balance of bitter coffee and floral hops.  There are notes of pine resin, lemon, and grapefruit along with the earthy, coffee notes.  The flavor is complex, hoppy, yet smooth.  There are some nicely pronounced Schwarzbier elements up front... smokiness, coffee, and toffee notes and the mid-range and finish provide big hoppy and citrusy flavors, and a bit warming from the alcohol content.  Coming in at 8.59% ABV, the Black Imperial IPA has some good kick and bite, but it finishes clean, dry, and rather smooth and less astringent for an IPA.  Moab Brewery's Black Imperial IPA is a really nice, complex ale with good balance and pronounced flavors... perfect for the emotionally intensity of Big Business!

"Battlefields Forever" is the 4th album by Seattle stoner metal/sludge metal band Big Business and was released on Halloween, October 31, 2013.  This very talented power trio is made up of Scott Martin on guitar and vocals, Jared Warren on bass and vocals, and Coady Willis on drums and vocals.  (Jared and Coady have also both been members of The Melvins, appearing on the albums "(A) Senile Animal" and "Nude With Boots".)  Incorporating both doom metal and hardcore punk into their musical approach, Big Business is heavy as hell, as heavy as the Moab Brewery's Black Imperial IPA is rich!  Each track is a blast of profound musical integrity and heaviness in the vein of Mastodon, The Melvins, and The Obsessed!  I don't think it is possible to listen to this album without banging your head.  Here's the complete track list:
  1. "Chump Chance"
  2. “No Vowels”
  3. “Battlefields”
  4. “Trees”
  5. “Aurum”
  6. “Doomsday, Today!”
  7. “Heavy Shoes”
  8. “Our Mutant”
  9. “Lonely Lyle”
Cheers!!
