March 8th-9th, 2014 - A Nocturnal Dep Session

Against my better judgment, I've got one more pairing tonight for you my friends!  The Meista here gettin' heavy with a pairing of the Delirium Nocturnum from Brouwerij Huyghe with "The 1996 Dep Sessions" by Iommi with Glenn Hughes!

Higher in alcohol content (11.2% ABV to be exact), the Delirium Nocturnum from Brouwerij Huyghe is a Belgian Strong Dark Ale.  This bad boy pours a deep chocolate brown in a frosted glass with a huge, frothy, 2-finger+ mocha head.  Dark ester aromas dominate the nose.  Notes of fig, dates, raisin, plum, booze, and roasted malts abound with a hint of Belgian yeast.  Exceptionally smooth, the mouthfeel is somewhat frothy, sticky, and oily, and a bit dry for this full-bodied dark ale.  A quintessential craft ale, the flavor of the Delirium Nocturnum is wonderfully rich, complex, decadent, and bold as fuckin' hell!  There are notes of chocolate covered cherries, raisin bread, molasses, vanilla, brown sugar, plums, candied raisins, rum cake, and aged bourbon.  I seriously cannot express how brilliant this beer really is in words!   A sipper to be sure, the Delirium Nocturnum finishes with a boozy warmness and a slight sourness that lingers.

Not released until September 28th of 2004, "The 1996 Dep Sessions" was recorded in 1996 by Black Sabbath guitarist Tony Iommi with "the voice of rock" Glenn Hughes (Trapeze, Deep Purple, Black Sabbath, Black Country Communion, solo) on vocals and fantastic guest musicians, Don Airey (keyboards), Geoff Nicholls (keyboards), Mike Exeter (keyboards), and Jimmy Copley (drums).  Heavy as hell, "The 1996 Dep Sessions" combines the doomy, sludgy Black Sabbath sound with 1970s hard rock/funk rock.  Like the Delirium Nocturnum, this is the heaviest of the heavy!  Each track is a singular exploration in musical/artistic integrity.  Songs like "Gone", "Don't You Tell Me", "Don't Drag The River", "Time Is The Healer", "I'm Not The Man", and "It Falls Through Me" are wonderfully rich rockin' monsters in the vein of Delirium Nocturnum deliciousness!

Cheers, hails, and op uw gezondheid!!
