May 24th, 2014 - Iggy Pop-Up IPA... or... An IPA For The Idiot

Hello!  The Meista here pairing Iggy Pop's "The Idiot" with a Pop-Up Session IPA from Boulevard Brewing Company!

Recorded between July 1976 (1976-07) and February 1977, and released on March 18th, 1977, "The Idiot" is the debut solo album by proto-punk rocker Iggy Pop.  It was co-written and produced by David Bowie, who also provided keyboards and synthesizers, guitars, pianos, saxophones, xylophones, and backing vocals on the album along with his band at the time (Carlos Alomar, Dennis Davis, and George Murray).  A huge departure from the hard rock/punk rock sound of the Stooges, "The Idiot" incorporates pop rock structure with electronic effects and treated instrument sounds, more like the Berlin Trilogy albums of Bowie during this same period.  Iggy has referred to "The Idiot" as his "album of freedom".  Notable tracks include "Sister Midnight" (Bowie would rework this song into the song "Red Money" on his "Lodger" album), the swinging "Nightclubbing", the upbeat "Funtime", "China Girl" (Bowie would re-record this on his 1983 album "Let's Dance"), the Lou Reed-esque "Tiny Girls", and "Mass Production".  Good stuff!!!  And speaking of good stuff...

The Pop-Up Session IPA from Boulevard Brewing Company pours a straw gold with a 1-2 finger white head with good retention that displays intricate lacing.  The nose is rather light with subtle aromas of malt and citrusy hops.  Brewed with pale, Marris Otter, and amber malts along with Mosaic, Cascade, Amarillo, Citra, and Centennial hops, the Pop-Up Session IPA has a complex, full flavor.  But with only 4.2% ABV and 41 IBUs, the Pop-Up is smooth, refreshing, and very drinkable.  There are notes of biscuit, soft caramel, and refreshing citrus notes (lemon, grapefruit, and tangerine).  It goes down easy and the very drinkable, very "sessionable" IPA character makes for a perfect bedfellow to the poppier sound of "The Idiot".

Cheers!!
