September 28th, 2014 - (r)Evolutionary Black Lager

God kväll!  The Meista here with a pairing of Hammerfall's wonderful new album "(r)Evolution" and a tasty Rogue Farms Dirtoir Black Lager from Rogue Ales for you tonight!!

"(r)Evolution" is the 9th studio album by the Swedish power metal band Hammerfall.  The album was released on August 27th, 2014 in Sweden, August 29th in mainland Europe, September 1st in the UK, and September 2nd in North America.  The album was produced by James Michael (lead singer of the rock band Sixx:A.M.) along with Hammerfall guitarists Oscar Dronjak and Pontus Norgren.  Hammerfall is Joacim Cans (lead and backing vocals), Oscar Dronjak (rhythm, lead guitars, keyboards, backing vocals, and production), Pontus Norgren (rhythm, lead guitars, backing vocals, and production), Fredrik Larsson (bass guitar and backing vocals), and Anders Johansson (drums).  And James Michael provides guest vocals on "We Won't Back Down"!  Returning to a more "classic" Hammerfall sound, "(r)Evolution" is full-on, straight-ahead European power metal at its best!  Along with the sound of the album being more akin to earlier works, a passage in the lyrics for "Hector's Hymn" makes direct reference to their 2005 album "Chapter V: Unbent, Unbowed, Unbroken".   Tracks like the title track, "Bushido", "Live Life Loud," "Ex Inferis", "Winter Is Coming", "Tainted Metal", "Evil Incarnate", and bonus track "Demonized" (among others) are big, powerful, epic, fantasy-infused rockers in the vein of Helloween, Iron Maiden, Judas Priest, and Manowar!  Get your copy of this kick-ass album from my pal Kevin at the Heavy Metal Shop (www.heavymetalshop.com)!!

The Rogue Farms Dirtoir Black Lager is a Schwartbier, but done in the (r)evolutionary style Rogue is known for... it drinks almost more like a Porter or a Stout than a Schwartbier.  Like "(re)Evolution", the Dirtoir Black Lager is a big, bold, and complex work of art.  It is brewed with Rogue Farms Dare™, Risk™, Dare™ R-10, and Risk™ R-7 malts, Carafa Special II malts, Rogue Farms Independent™ and Revolution™ hops, German yeast, Free Range Coastal Water.  The Dirtoir Black Lager pours an opaque, almost jet black color with a huge, lingering tan head that displays intricate, sustained lacing.  The nose is earthy, rich, and inviting.  Big aromas of vanilla bean, dark chocolate, cocoa, roasted malts, black bread, and caramel abound.  The mouthfeel is creamy, smooth, sticky, and dry with just enough bitter bite from those Independent™ and Revolution™ hops.  Like the nose, the flavor is big, earthy, chocolaty, rich, and complex.  There's lots of earthy coffee bean, cocoa, hazelnut, and herbal flavor along with sweet notes of vanilla, caramel, milk chocolate, etc.  The finish of the Dirtoir Black Lager is dry, chocolaty and lingering... delicious!  The Rogue Farms Dirtoir Black Lager is a perfect beer for the power metal perfection that is Hammerfall!!

Skål... Helan går!!  Hails!!
