Hello and welcome! This silly blog is an experiment in my own vanity in terms of my opinions on craft beer and music and various pairings (much like you would do with food). I definitely want to express that I am no expert in terms of brewing or in musical composition. This is merely opinion, my opinion (sometimes clouded by consumption) with regards to enjoyable beers and music. Cheers! October 3rd, 2014 - They Only Come Out For Amber Ale
Good afternoon and happy Friday my beer and rock and roll brethren! The Meista here with a classic pairing for ya today... a Rogue American Amber Ale and "They Only Come Out At Night" by the Edgar Winter Group! This pairing is dedicated to the late members of the this great band! Cheers and rest in peace Dan Hartman, Ronnie Montrose, and Chuck Ruff !
Brewed with C40, C150, 2-Row, and Rogue Farms Dare and Risk malts, along with Kent Golding and Cascade hops, Rogue Farms Rebel hops, free range coastal water, and Pacman yeast, this 5.6% American Amber Ale is an insanely drinkable/sessionable red ale that goes great with the rockin' good vibes of the Edgar Winter Group's "They Only Come Out At Night"! It pours a beautiful copper/honey mahogany red with a tightly knit off-white head. The nose is both earthy and sweet. There are aromas of coffee, toffee, honey, cinnamon bread, and a hint of rum. Medium bodied with sharp carbonation, the mouthfeel is crisp and dry, but with some creaminess in the mid-range and some hoppy slickness in the finish. The flavor of the Rogue American Amber Ale is both malty and hoppy. There are tasty notes of hearty barley, lots of roasty malts, bitter black tea, smooth caramel, and grassy hops. The finish is smooth and creamy with just a bit of lingering bitterness. The Rogue American Amber Ale is fast becoming one of my favorite go-to ales! And speaking of favorites...
Released in November of 1972, "They Only Come Out At Night" is the 3rd (and most successful) studio album by the Edgar Winter Group. The album features 2 of the band's biggest hits, "Frankenstein" (#1 Pop Singles) and "Free Ride" (#14 Pop Singles). (Interesting side note: "Frankenstein" is one of Ozzy Osbourne's all-time favorite songs.) Along with the insanely talented and charismatic frontman Edgar Winter (organ, synthesizer, ARP 2600, piano, marimba, saxophone, timbales, clavinet, and lead and backing vocals), personnel on the album include the late Ronnie Montrose (guitars and mandolin), the late Dan Hartman (guitars, bass, percussion, maracas, ukulele, and lead and backing vocals), Randy Jo Hobbs (bass), Johnny Badanjek (drums), the late Chuck Ruff (conga, drums, and backing vocals), and special guest Rick Derringer (production, bass, guitars, pedal steel, backing vocals, and claves). Highlights on the album include "When It Comes", "Alta Mira", "Undercover Man", "Rock 'N' Roll Boogie Woogie Blues", "We Had A Real Good Time", and of course the monster hits "Frankenstein" and "Free Ride" (man I love this song!!). The musicianship on this album is unparalleled... definitely a MUST for any rock and roll fan!!
Keep on rockin'... cheers!!
