March 1st, 2015 - Takeout Of The Silent Planet

Good afternoon!  The Meista here today with another rockin' pairing for ya!  I'm going with King's X's classic and brilliant debut album "Out Of The Silent Planet" and a Squatters Takeout Rye IPA from the Utah Brewers Cooperative (Squatters)!

Album Info:
  • Artist: King's X
  • Title: "Out Of The Silent Planet"
  • Recorded: Rampart Studios, Houston, Texas
  • Release date: March 28th, 1988 (debut studio album by King's X)
  • Record company: Megaforce
  • Album cover art: James McDermott
  • Personnel: Jerry Gaskill (drums and vocals), Doug Pinnick (bass and vocals), and Ty Tabor (guitars and vocals)
  • Musical style: Hard rock, progressive rock/metal with elements of power metal, psychedelic rock, and funk
  • Sound: Powerful, soulful, multi-layered, honest, and masterful... the sound on "Out Of The Silent Planet" is a rich tapestry of sonic brilliance!  Tabor's guitar tone is otherworldly, Pinnick's bass work and amazing vocals are tear-worthy, and Gaskill's perfect and swinging rhythmic beats make for a near perfect album!
  • Major themes: Love, hope, spirituality, the search for knowledge/truth
  • Tracks:
  1. "In The New Age"
  2. "Goldilox"
  3. "Power Of Love"
  4. "Wonder"
  5. "Sometimes"
  6. "King"
  7. "What Is This?"
  8. "Far Far Away"
  9. "Shot Of Love"
  10. "Visions"
    Brew Info:
  • Brewery: Utah Brewers Cooperative (Squatters)
  • Website: http://www.squatters.com/
  • Brew: Squatters Takeout Rye IPA
  • Style: American Rye India Pale Ale (IPA)
  • Serving: 12 ounce bottle
  • ABV: 6.25%
  • Pour: Slightly hazy, bright orange-copper with a thin, white head that leaves intricate, streaming lacing.
  • Nose: The nose is full of floral and citrus goodness.  There are aromas of grapefruit, orange, lemon, and crackery biscuit along with more subtle caramel/toffee sweetness.
  • Taste: Spicy and hop-forward, the Squatters Takeout Rye IPA is characterized by a bold citrus, pine, and peppery flavor.
  • Mouthfeel: Light to medium-bodied with good carbonation, the Squatters Takeout Rye IPA is crisp, refreshing, and peppery with a dry, bitter finish.
Overall pairing: As with the Squatters Takeout Rye IPA, "Out Of The Silent Planet" is a wonderfully textured, delicious, and refreshing album... it sounds as relevant and fresh now as it did 27 years ago (wow.. has it really been that long?!)!  The crispness and rye spicy bite works well with the heavier elements of the album, while the sweeter and more fruity flavors work well with the more innocent and hopeful outlook of the lyrics.

Cheers!!
