September 29th, 2018 - The Madcap Laughs In His White Mischief

Hello there friends... "and now for something completely different"!  The Meista here today pairing a White Mischief Salted White Peach Sour from Garage Project and "The Madcap Laughs" by Syd Barrett!

Album Info:
  • Artist: Syd Barrett
  • Title: "The Madcap Laughs"
  • Recorded: May 28th, 1968 through August 5th, 1969 at Abbey Roads Studio in London, England
  • Release date: January 3rd, 1970 (1st solo studio album by Syd Barrett)
  • Record company: Harvest Records
  • Production: Syd Barrett, Peter Jenner, Malcom Jones, David Gilmour, and Roger Waters
  • Album cover art: Mick Rock (photography) and Storm Thorgerson and Aubrey Powell of Hipgnosis (design)
  • Personnel: Syd Barrett (vocals and acoustic and electric guitars) with David Gilmour (bass guitar, 12-string acoustic guitar, and drums on "Octopus"), Hugh Hopper (bass guitar on tracks 2 and 3), Mike Ratledge (keyboards on tracks 2 and 3), Jerry Shirley (drums on tracks 4 and 6), Willie Wilson (drums), and Robert Wyatt (drums on tracks 2 and 3)
  • Musical style: Art rock, experimental pop, psychedelic rock, folk rock
  • Sound: With his whimsical, yet introspective approach, "The Madcap Laughs" is a blend of  up-tempo art-rock and more pastoral / folk material.  At times the album sounds like his previous band Pink Floyd and at others it sounds like hippie folk music.  Of the album, Barrett once stated: "I liked what came out, only it was released far too long after it was done. I wanted it to be a whole thing that people would listen to all the way through with everything related and balanced, the tempos and moods offsetting each other, and I hope that's what it sounds like."
  • Major themes: Life, love, beauty, states of consciousness, sanity / insanity, drugs, loss, lust, etc.
  • Tracks:
  1. "Terrapin"
  2. "No Good Trying"
  3. "No Man's Land"
  4. "Dark Globe"
  5. "Here I Go"
  6. "Octopus"
  7. "Golden Hair"
  8. "Long Gone"
  9. "She Took A Long Cold Look"
  10. "Feel"
  11. "If It's In You"
  12. "Late Night"

Brew Info:

  • Website: https://garageproject.co.nz/
  • Brew: White Mischief Salted White Peach Sour
  • Style: Gose / Wild Ale
  • Serving: 12 ounce can
  • ABV: 2.9%
  • Ingredients: Kettle soured wheat, lightly salted and infused with white peaches
  • Pour: The White Mischief pours a very hazy, golden-yellow with a billowy, 2+ finger bright white head with good sustain and intricate lacing.
  • Nose: The nose is tart, salty, and fruity.  There are aromas of sour yeast, lemon juice and zest, crackery wheat, fresh peaches, and salt.
  • Taste: The taste of the White Mischief follows the nose with lots of acidic, fruity, sweet, sour, and salty flavors.  There are notes of fresh peaches, lemon juice, apricot, and light salt.
  • Mouthfeel: Light-bodied with lively carbonation, the mouthfeel is crisp and tart with a salty, dry, and sweet finish.

Overall pairing: The Garage Project White Mischief Salted White Peach Sour with its 3 district properties is great for the complexity, depth, and pluralistic elements of Barrett's wonderful whimsical and beautiful "The Madcap Laughs"!  Those salty/sweet/sour characteristics are perfect for the pop sensibility and more progressive and introspective elements of the album!

Cheers!!
