January 16th, 2022 - Release From Agony And Into A Hell

Guten tag!  The Meista here again with another killer brew and killer album pairing for ya!  Tonight, I'm rocking out to German thrash metal band Destruction and their wonderful "Release From Agony" album along with a crisp and tasty Hell from Flötzinger Bräu / Privatbrauerei Franz Steegmüller!

Album Info:

  • Artist: Destruction
  • Title: "Release From Agony"
  • Recorded: September 1987 at Karo Studio in Münster, West Germany
Release date: December 1st, 1987 (3rd studio album by Destruction)
  • Record company: Steamhammer/SPV
  • Production: Kalle Trapp
  • Album cover art: Joachim Luetke
  • Personnel: Oliver "Olli" Kaiser (drums), Marcel "Schmier" Schirmer (bass and lead vocals), Mike Sifringer (rhythm guitars), and Harry Wilkens (lead guitars)
  • Guest musicians: André Grieder (backing vocals), Mille Petrozza (backing vocals), V.O. Pulver (backing vocals), and Ventor (backing vocals)
  • Musical style: Thrash metal
  • Sound: Blending more progressive and technical elements with their style of thrash metal, with "Release From Agony", Destruction conveyed a darker and more ominous sound than their first two albums.  This is classic Destruction!  The songs are characterized by fiery fast guitar riffs, machine gun fire drumming, and thunderous bass along with Schmier's aggressive broken glass and gravel vocals.
  • Major themes: Horror, fear, self-doubt, aggression, oppression, cruelty, etc.
  • Tracks:
  1. "Beyond Eternity"
  2. "Release From Agony"
  3. "Dissatisfied Existence"
  4. "Sign Of Fear"
  5. "Unconscious Ruins"
  6. "Incriminated"
  7. "Our Oppression"
  8. "Survive To Die"

Brew Info:

  • Brewery: Flötzinger Bräu / Privatbrauerei Franz Steegmüller (Rosenheim, Germany)
  • Website: Alterskontrolle - Flötzinger Bräu Rosenheim (floetzinger.de)/
  • Brew: Flötzinger Hell
  • Style: German Helles / Lager
  • Serving: 16 ounce can
  • ABV: 5.2%
  • IBUs: 18
  • Pour: The Hell pours a clear, bright golden yellow with a frothy and firm, bright white, 2+ finger head with lots of sticky, soapy lacing.
  • Nose: The nose is bready, grainy, musty, sweet, and grassy.  There are aromas of pale grains, cereal grains, crackery biscuit, apple, summer grass, and soft caramel.
  • Taste: Following the nose, the taste of the Flötzinger Hell is grainy, grassy, yeasty, and semi-sweet.  There are notes of barley grain, apple, light corn, and soft caramel.
  • Mouthfeel: Light to medium in body with lots of bubbly carbonation, the mouthfeel is very crisp and smooth with a rather clean, slightly sweet finish.

Overall pairing: The crisp, grainy, and sweet flavors and aromas of the
Flötzinger Bräu / Privatbrauerei Franz Steegmüller Hell is the perfect foil for the aggressive metal juggernaut that is Destruction's "Release From Agony"!  The grassy and grainy notes are great for the more aggressive guitars, while the sweeter fruit ester aromas and flavors really compliment the overall performance of the band!

Prost!!  Hails!!
