Hello and welcome! This silly blog is an experiment in my own vanity in terms of my opinions on craft beer and music and various pairings (much like you would do with food). I definitely want to express that I am no expert in terms of brewing or in musical composition. This is merely opinion, my opinion (sometimes clouded by consumption) with regards to enjoyable beers and music. Cheers! October 11th, 2013 - A Blue Collar Nut Brown
Here's a pairing for friend of the page Danny Popp Wiedenhoeft, who turned me on to this killer band from Illinois today! This is Convoy and their album "Blue Collar America" with a Rogue Ales Hazelnut Brown Nectar! Cheers Danny!!
A blues-based metal band (with a touch of Southern rock) from Chicago, IL, Convoy is influenced by such musicians as Corrosion of Conformity, Tool, Down, Clutch, Black Label Society, Pantera and the mighty Black Sabbath. Yet, they have a very fresh, very original sound as well. Song like "Rule Of Pain," "Damage Done," "Thru The Haze" (my favorite on the album), "Need For Speed," "Whiskey Sour," "Girls," "In The Mouth Of Madness," and "1969" are all in-your-face, kick-ass, heavy-hitting rock and roll... perfect drinking music!!
Danny suggested a darker beer as a pairing, which I think is a very good call! I decided to go with a European style brown ale from all-American Oregon brewers, Rogue Ales... the Hazelnut Brown Nectar, a 2011 and 2012 gold medal winner of the Great American Beer Festival! The Hazelnut Brown Nectar pours a very cloudy dark brown with a frothy, cream-colored head. The nose is malty, sweet, and nutty. There are some really rich caramel notes that give way to the nuttiness of the hazelnut. There is a hint of cocoa as well. Brewed with 2-row, Brown, Carastan, 13/17, Crystal, Beeston Pale, and Chocolate malts along with Sterling and Perle hops, Pacman yeast, and that delicious Hazelnut extract, this brew packs a lot of flavor and complexity in a 22 ounce bottle! As the label states, it has a "rich nutty flavor and a smooth malty finish." There are notes of wheat toast, buttery toffee, raisin, prune, and Tootsie Roll. Full-bodied with minimal carbonation, the Hazelnut Brown Nectar is silky smooth and chewy in mouthfeel. Good stuff!!
Keep rockin' brothas and sistas!! And keep a cold one chilled for your pal the Meista over at Brews and Tunes... Cheers!!
