April 4th, 2014 - Lock Up The Wolves Before They Kill That Pronghorn... Or Drink My IPA!

One more for you tonight... how's 'bout some Big Sky IPA from Big Sky Brewing Company and Dio's "Lock Up The Wolves"?!  You were about to say "hell yes!", weren't you?  That's what I thought!  :)

"Lock Up The Wolves" was released on May 15, 1990 through Reprise Records and was the 5th album from the band named for the singer, THE voice of metal, Mr. Ronnie James Dio.  The album found a complete change of musician line-up over the previous "Dream Evil" album (apart from Ronnie James Dio of course!).  18-year-old guitarist Rowan Robertson joined the band for "Lock Up The Wolves" as did drummer (ex-AC/DC) Simon Wright, who would remain with the band until Ronnie's untimely death in 2010.  Teddy Cook took over bass duties and Jens Johansson played keyboards on the album.  Although not as commercially successful as previous albums, "Lock Up The Wolves" is a rockin' good time from the machine-gun fire intensity of the opening track "Wild One" on to the finale "My Eyes"!  Songs like "Hey Angel", "Between Two Hearts", "Night Music", "Lock Up the Wolves", "Evil On Queen Street", "Why Are They Watching Me" are classic Dio in every essence of the term "Dio"... true, honest, powerful metal!!  I picked up this gem from my good buddy Kevin Kirk at the Heavy Metal Shop here in Salt Lake City, Utah... and you should too!!  Learn more about the Heavy Metal Shop at https://www.facebook.com/TheHeavyMetalShop!!

Big Sky IPA is a crisp and aromatic India Pale with citrus and pine notes coupled with a sweet finish.  Coming in at 65 IBU and 6.2% ABV, the Big Sky IPA is .  Big Sky pours a very cloudy (almost opaque) dark copper hue with a healthy 1-2 finger, off white head.  Although not as hoppy in fragrance as some of the other northwestern IPAs, Big Sky has a very floral, quite soapy nose with underlying sweetness.  The mouthfeel is rather sharp, tangy, and juicy.  Big Sky IPA has a very strong malty flavor coupled with the bittersweet hops and again, a very sweet finish.  There are surprisingly strong notes of caramel and/or toffee, orange juice, mango, pine, and slight notes of smoked wood.   A very good, very interesting, and solid ale, the Big Sky IPA is a fitting brew for the intensity and passion that is Dio's "Lock Up The Wolves"!!  Learn more about Big Sky Brewing Company and all their fine beers at http://www.bigskybrew.com/!

Raise those horns and beers for RJD!!!!  Cheers Dio... rest in peace!!!
