July 25th, 2014 - A Shipyard In Waves

You crazy kids ready to get heavy.. and I mean really @#$%ing heavy??  Right on... let's do this!!  The Meista here pairing Trivium's "In Waves" (Special Edition) and a Shipyard Brewing Company Pugsley's Signature Series XXXX IPA... hells yeah!!

So, let me begin with an apology... I've been meaning to pair this lovely brew for literally months.  (This picture is from mid-April of this year when I traveled to the East Coast.)  If you love big, bold, very aggressive, and boozy Imperial IPAs (like I do), then the Pugsley's Signature Series XXXX IPA from Shipyard Brewing Company is for you!  This one is an ass-kicker... in a very good way!  It pours an opaque rusty copper with a rather thin head that leaves almost not lacing.  The nose is a wonderful blend of sweet malt aromas, fruit ester, and piney hop aromas.  There are aromas of plum, orange, tangerine, toffee, biscuit, and pine.  Full bodied with lower carbonation, the mouthfeel is rather smooth, but with a good, bitter bite and some oiliness.  The taste is an explosion of malts and hops.  There are huge notes of sweet toffee, spices, black tea, piney hops, and some fruit ester.  With the 9.25% ABV, the Pugsley's Signature Series XXXX IPA has a boozy bite throughout and finishes with a boozy, bitter kick... great for the complexity and intensity of "In Waves"!

"In Waves" is the 5th studio album by extreme/thrash metal band Trivium and was released worldwide on various dates between August 2nd and August 9th, 2011 through Roadrunner Records.  Maybe a little more commercial than previous albums, "In Waves" is still heavy and aggressive as hell!  Matt Heafy's lead/backing vocals and rhythm and lead guitars are compelling, mesmerizing, and brutal.  Corey Beaulieu's lead and rhythm guitar work is equally as powerful.  Paolo Gregoletto's bass guitar work is a galloping cavalry.  While Nick Augusto's drums and percussion is a thunderclap of intensity.  "In Waves" finds the band incorporating more progressive elements into their style of thrash, which has garnered criticisms of overproduction from certain camps, but I find the album wonderfully rich, complex, and intense.  Title track "In Waves" is mesmerizingly heavy and perfectly executed.  Songs like "Inception Of The End", "Watch The World Burn", "Black", "Caustic Are The Ties That Bind", "Drowning In Slow Motion" (Bonus Track), "Chaos Reigns", "Shattering The Skies Above" (Bonus Track), and the cover of Sepultura's "Slave New World" (Bonus Track) are profoundly and aggressively pure metal in the classic thrash sense, but with a modern, cutting edge freshness.  Man, what a killer album!  Pick it up from my buddy Kevin at the Heavy Metal Shop (www.heavymetalshop.com)!!

Cheers... and hails!!
