November 14th, 2014 - Chasing A Trick Of The Tail

"And now for something completely different..."  I'm going old school prog tonight with "A Trick Of The Tail" and a Chasing Tail Golden Ale from the Utah Brewers Cooperative (Wasatch Brewing)!  This pairing goes out to my favorite identical twins... Nick and Dean... cheers brothas!!

"A Trick Of The Tail" is the 7th studio release by progressive English rock band Genesis.  It was released in February of 1976 and is the first album by the band without Peter Gabriel on lead vocals as he had left the band to pursue a solo career.  Drummer Phil Collins took over lead vocals upon Garbriel's departure.  One of their best albums (in my opinion), "A Trick Of The Tail" is the quintessential English prog album of the '70s.  It is bombastic, engaging, and wonderfully melodic.  The band at the time was Tony Banks (acoustic and electric pianos, organ, synthesizers, mellotron, 12-string guitar, and backing vocals), Phil Collins (lead and backing vocals, drums, and percussion), Steve Hackett (electric guitars and 12-string guitar), and Mike Rutherford (bass guitar, 12-string guitar, and bass pedals).  There's a lot of great moments and elements (both lyrically and musically) to this album, but what really does it for me is Hackett's guitar work... fucking breathtaking!!  Just listen to his work on "Dance On A Volcano"... perfection!!

Chasing Tail Golden Ale is a lovely mellow Golden Ale.  Brewed with Golding hops and rolled barley, the Chasing Tail is an easy-going, biscuity and grassy light ale.  It pours a slightly cloudy light amber with a bright white, 1-finger head.  The nose is characterized by biscuity malts, piney/grassy hops, and hearty barley.  Light-bodied and moderately carbonated, the mouthfeel is crisp and refreshing.  The taste is a bit different from the nose... hoppy, but very sweet.  There are notes of soft caramel, summer grass, stoneground cracker, and honey-wheat bread... with a touch of lemon.  Incredibly refreshing and easy going, the finish is quite refreshing... as is "A Trick Of The Tail" !

Cheers from the Meista!!
