Good evening, prost, and hails my wicked metal and craft beer brethren! The Meista here tonight pairing "Festivals Of The Wicked" by Iced Earth and an Oktoberfest Festbier Lager from Ninkasi Brewing Company!
I realize Oktoberfest is over, but I didn't get around to pairing this brew before the end of last week. The Oktoberfest Festbier Lager is a Märzen, brewed in the traditional Bavarian style. Full-bodied, rich, mellow in hops, and very toasty, Märzen's make for a great fall brew. Ninkasi's version pours a clear copper-orange with thin, bright white head that leaves a fair amount of lacing. The nose is characterized by very clean and crisp malt hop aromas. There are scents of freshly toasted bread, slightly sweet and very subtle caramel, and some grassy hop notes. The mouthfeel is crisp and refreshing and very smooth. It goes down easy... maybe too easy! :) The taste is biscuity and malty with some more subtle fruit and hop notes along with some spices. A very tasty beer... for a very tasty album!
Released on July 12th, 2011 in the U.S., "Festivals Of The Wicked" is a collection of live Iced Earth performance taken from 3 shows: Wacken Open Air (August 8, 2007 in Wacken, Germany), Rock Hard Festival (May 11, 2008 in Gelsenkirchen, Germany), and Metal Camp Slovenia (July 7, 2008 in Tolmin, Slovenia). Performances include two of Iced Earth's ex-vocalists, the amazing Matt Barlow (now with Ashes Of Ares) and the great Tim "Ripper" Owns (Winter's Bane, Judas Priest, Beyond Fear, Dio Disciples, etc.). And of course the rest of the amazing band (at that time) includes Jon Schaffer (guitars and vocals), Troy Seele (lead guitar), Freddie Vidales (bass), Dennis Hayes (bass at the Wacken 2007 show), and Brent Smedley (drums). If you get the chance, I highly recommend seeing Iced Earth live... they will kick your ass into next year!! Here's the amazing full track list:
