Hello and welcome! This silly blog is an experiment in my own vanity in terms of my opinions on craft beer and music and various pairings (much like you would do with food). I definitely want to express that I am no expert in terms of brewing or in musical composition. This is merely opinion, my opinion (sometimes clouded by consumption) with regards to enjoyable beers and music. Cheers! November 7th, 2014 - The Human Fraîcheur Du Soir Contradiction
Good afternoon! Your pal the Meista here today pairing a Fraîcheur Du Soir from Brasserie Trois Dames and "The Human Contradiction" from Delain!
Released on April 8th, 2014 through Napalm Records, "The Human Contradiction" is the 4th studio album by Dutch symphonic/gothic metal band Delain. The band is made up of Charlotte Wessels (lead vocals), Timo Somers (guitars), Otto Schimmelpenninck van der Oije (bass guitar), Martijn Westerholt (keyboards - formerly of Within Temptation), and Sander Zoer (drums). Guest vocalists on the album include Alissa White-Gluz (Arch Enemy, ex-The Agonist), Marco Hietala (Nightwish, Tarot) and George Oosthoek (ex-Orphanage). The album's title was inspired by science fiction writer Octavia E. Butler's trilogy Lilith's Brood. Thematically, "The Human Contradiction" further explores themes of isolation, individuality, and being different as their previous album "We Are the Others" also explored. Although a bit poppier, the album is heavily influenced musically by the likes of Edenbridge, Kamelot, Nightwish, and Within Temptation. Songs like "Here Come The Vultures," "Your Body Is A Battleground", "Stardust", "Tell Me, Mechanist", "Sing To Me", "Army Of Dolls", and "The Tragedy Of The Commons" are upbeat, fast-paced, epic poppy rockers delivered with passion and integrity. If you aren't familiar with Delain and are a fan of Nightwish and Within Temptation, I recommend checking out a copy of "The Human Contradiction"!
The Fraîcheur Du Soir is a spiced Witbier, a Belgian-style pale ale brewed by Swiss brewery Brasserie Trois Dames. Not easy to find (apparently discontinued?), the Fraîcheur Du Soir often comes with a hefty price tag here in the States. It pours a peachy gold with a thin, but frothy head. The nose is characterized by wheat, citrus, and spice aromas along with banana and bubblegum. There are scents of orange, lemon, clove, coriander, nutmeg, freshly baked wheat bread, and soft banana. The taste follows the nose with lots of spice and citrus goodness. There are notes of caramel malt, coriander, orange peel, and yeast. Light to medium-bodied, the Fraîcheur Du Soir is well carbonated, somewhat sharp and has a crisp, dry finish.
Proscht... Proost... Zum Wohl... Gsundheit... Gezondheid!!
