October 17th, 2019 - Starving Gods In Kingdoms Disdained

Hello and happy Thursday evil-doers!  The Meista here tonight getting heavy and a little evil with a pairing of Morbid Angel's kickass "Kingdoms Disdained" and a delicious Starving Gods Of Old from TRVE Brewing Company!

Album Info:
  • Artist: Morbid Angel
  • Title: "Kingdoms Disdained"
  • Recorded: August 2016 through October 2017 at Mana Recording Studios in St. Petersburg, Florida
  • Release date: December 1st, 2017 (10th album by Morbid Angel)
  • Record company: Silver Lining Music
  • Production: Morbid Angel and Erik Rutan
  • Album cover art: Ken Coleman

  • Additional musicians: Vadim aka Dan Vadim Von (lead guitar on "Declaring New Law (Secret Hell)")
  • Musical style: Death metal
  • Sound: Returning to a more traditional death metal focus, the sound on "Kingdoms Disdained" is nothing short of brutal!  It blends a sonic attack of fierce and fiery guitars with blitzkrieg drumming and brutal and infernal growls!  It is raw, incredibly fast, unapologetic, and wonderfully aggressive!  This may be their heaviest, most brutal album by Morbid Angel to date!  Tucker described the album as "a big, grandiose vibe that sort of becomes a little larger than life. That's really what I like most about the album myself. I think what stands out about it, is that even though it's really raw and nasty, it's kind of timely as well. I think it fits into what is going on in the world today."
  • Major themes: Death, destruction, despair, mythology, the destruction of man, rot, repression, hate and criticism and opposition to organized religions, war, corruption, etc.
  • Tracks:
  1. "Piles Of Little Arms"
  2. "D.E.A.D." [Department Of Eradication And Disposal]
  3. "Garden Of Disdain"
  4. "The Righteous Voice"
  5. "Architect And Iconoclast"
  6. "Paradigms Warped"
  7. "The Pillars Crumbling"
  8. "For No Master"
  9. "Declaring New Law (Secret Hell)"
  10. "From The Hand Of Kings"
  11. "The Fall Of Idols"

Brew Info:
  • Brewery: TRVE Brewing Company (Denver, Colorado)
  • Website: https://www.trvebrewing.com/
  • Brew: Starving Gods Of Old
  • Style: Saison / Farmhouse Ale / American Wild Ale
  • Serving: 12 ounce bottle
  • ABV: 6.6%
  • Pour: The Starving Gods Of Old pours a hazy, golden-yellow with a thin, bright white fizzy head that dissipates quickly and leaves virtually no lacing.
  • Nose: The nose is funky, fruity, earthy, and woody.  There are aromas of fresh peaches, dried apricot, orange peel, pear, Belgian yeast, lemon yogurt, wet leather, and light oak.
  • Taste: The taste of the Starving Gods Of Old is bright, funky, fruity, tart, spicy, and earthy.  There are notes of lemon juice, sweet peach (more so as it warms), dried apricot, pear juice, very soft banana, barnyard funk, and oak.
  • Mouthfeel: Light medium in body and well carbonated, the mouthfeel of the Starving Gods Of Old is crisp, sharp, slightly tart, frothy, yet smooth with a very dry finish.

Overall pairing: With the almost overwhelming brutal aggression and juggernaut power of Morbid Angel's "Kingdoms Disdained", I decided to go with a brew that would be more of a foil... thus the lovely and very drinkable Starving Gods Of Old from TRVE!  Those crisp, earthy, funky, and fruity flavors make this a very crushable beer... and I'm not sure if there is anything out there that makes you want to crush things more than Morbid Angel does!  :)  Furthermore, the very cool art work and the complexity of the Starving Gods Of Old make for a great pairing!
Morbid Angel will be touring with Watain and Incantation this November and December!  I'll be seeing them in early December!  You don't want to miss this tour!

HAILS!!
