February 25th, 2012 - Drink From The Cup Of Devastator!

You ready for some brutal, unapologetic, devastating metal and beer?  I said, are you ready?!?  Good... 'cause tonight I'm pairing Wasatch Brewery's The Devastator Double Bock Lager and Bloodbath's "The Fathomless Mastery". Oh, and this pairing is dedicated to fellow metal-head, John Forgach, co-host of the great metal show, Maximum Distortion!  This is the man and the show that introduced me to Bloodbath!!  Thanks John!!  \m/  \m/

The Devastator is an intense German-style lager with big, Big, BIG flavor and equally big alcohol content... 8% by volume... a favorite of dumb-ass, U of U frat boys here in Utah because of the quick drunk fix.  :)  The Devastator has a huge malty nose... like fresh-baked wheat bread and an incredibly rich and malty flavor.  I'm reminded of European double bocks and even some of the big English stouts due to the slight bourbon notes.  This is big-bodied stuff, but very drinkable.  Definitely not a beer to be taken lightly though!

And speaking of not taking something lightly... Bloodbath's brutal 2008 album "The Fathomless Mastery" will kick the ass of your ass!  This is most definitely for hard-core, death metal fans only!  Nothing melodic here friends... although, musically it is intricate, precise, and simply put... genius!  The guitar and bass work is nothing short of amazing... the vocals, brutal and perfect, and the drumming, unreal!!  From opening track, "At the Behest of Death" to "Slaughtering the Will to Live," "Mock the Cross," and "Drink the Cup of Heresy" on to the finale, "Wretched Human Mirror," Bloodbath attacks your senses with brutal and unapologetic force.  Fronted by Opeth genius Michael Akerfeldt and members of Katatonia, Bloodbath's approach is intense from the first note (like the Devastator) to the last.  In the tradition of death metal pioneers, Morbid Angel, Bloodbath "[devours] the feeble" with musicianship and an intensity for death metal that is not easily matched!  There are some "beautiful" moments here as well... check out the guitar ending of "Hades Rising"... breathtaking!

If you are looking for a night of devastation... grab yourself a bottle or two of The Devastator and spin a copy of "The Fathomless Mastery"... and don't forget to check out Maximum Distortion every Wednesday night at 10:30 p.m. MST at http://www.publicbroadcasting.net/krcl/guide.guide main and make sure you check out www.utahbeers.com as well as!!
