Hello and welcome! This silly blog is an experiment in my own vanity in terms of my opinions on craft beer and music and various pairings (much like you would do with food). I definitely want to express that I am no expert in terms of brewing or in musical composition. This is merely opinion, my opinion (sometimes clouded by consumption) with regards to enjoyable beers and music. Cheers! November 23rd, 2013 - Honey Raspberry Jelly Jam
Good evening rockers and boozers! The Meista here pairing "The Jelly Jam 2" by The Jelly Jam and a Honey Raspberry Ale from Spanish Peaks Brewing Company!
A very hard rocking (almost metal) progressive rock power trio, The Jelly Jam is a super group (in the truest sense of the phrase) consisting of King's X guitarist/vocalist Ty Tabor, drummer Rod Morgenstein (The Dixie Dregs/Winger), and Dream Theater bassist John Myung. "The Jelly Jam 2" is the second album (obviously) by the band and was release a little over 10 years ago on September 13th, 2004. Characterized by hard-driving riffs, intense playing, precise musicianship, and strong songwriting, "The Jelly Jam 2" is a monster of an album! Songs like "Not Today," "Empty," "Allison," "She Was Alone," "Angel Or Devil," "Runaway," and "War Is..." are big, meaty, powerful tracks with elements of King's X, The Dixie Dregs, and Dream Theater, but also embracing classic hard rock, and at the same time, fresh and new. More "mellow" tracks like "Coming Round," "Maybe," and "You Don't Need Me Anyway" add great balance to the album. "The Jelly Jam 2" is an album of three amazing musicians producing great music on their own terms... a must own for any fan of hard rock, metal, and progressive rock!
With something as hard-hitting as "The Jelly Jam 2," I thought I would go with a lighter and sweeter brew to contrast The Jelly Jam's more aggressive elements... thus, the Honey Raspberry Ale from Spanish Peaks Brewing Company. I would wager it has been about 20 years since I've tasted a honey raspberry beer. The Honey Raspberry Ale is a light-bodied amber that pours a slightly hazy cooper-amber with a thin head. The nose is very sweet with big berry and honey notes followed by more caramel-like malt notes. Along the same lines, the flavor is big raspberry notes (sweet and somewhat tart) with malty and biscuit notes that follow. Easy drinking, the Honey Raspberry Ale goes down nicely with a clean, refreshing finish. Not something I would drink much of, still an okay brew to rock out to the kick-ass rocking roll of The Jelly Jam on a Saturday evening!!

Cheers!
